When you’re renting, bathroom space is at a premium. But that doesn’t mean everything in your bathroom has to be totally utilitarian! To add some pizzazz to the bathroom, think about including décor that’s both useful and stylish — you’ll save space and look good doing it. Here are five bathroom décor ideas to get you started.
1. A Perky Plant
What’s the easiest way to bring a sense of calm to your bathroom? By perking up the countertop with a cute plant. Leafy green indoor plants help put people at ease and can even aid in reducing indoor pollution. If you really want your plant to do double duty, though, invest in an aloe vera plant like the one above. This species of succulent plant has healing properties; the juice from the plant’s thick leaves can soothe burns, cuts and rashes. Having this handy plant in the bathroom, where your first aid kit is also probably stored, makes a lot of sense.
2. Pretty Soap
If you’ve just been plopping down a drugstore brand of soap bar in your soap dish and calling it a day, here’s a simple way to fancy up your bathroom décor: Invest in pretty soap bars decorated with interesting patterns or phrases. And don’t worry about the intricate indentations washing away with use — that just gives you a good excuse to buy more fabulous soap!
3. Repurposed Knickknack Containers
Chances are your cabinet space beneath the bathroom sink is pretty small, so it’s always helpful to free up some space by bringing your most-used items from under the sink to on top of the counter. To keep things tidy and stylish, display small bathroom items like cotton swabs and hair ties in cute, easy-to-access containers. Old tea light holders are a great option, because they often come in pretty designs and colors — and you probably already have a few lying around the house!
4. Keepsake Display Toothbrush Holder
Do you like to collect rocks, shells or stones from all your travels? Display your small keepsake items in your bathroom without taking up any extra space with this cool toothbrush holder. I actually repurposed this from an old candle holder, but you can recreate the look easily with just a few items. Use a tall, clear vase (make sure it doesn’t have tapered sides) as your base, and fill it about halfway up with your shells or other mementos. Then place a shorter vase or glass on top, making sure it’s slightly smaller in diameter. You can stylishly store your toothbrush and toothpaste inside! You can even fill the canister with potpourri, an old bathroom standby.
5. Fragrant Dried Herbs
Speaking of potpourri … every bathroom needs something to keep the smell in check. But instead of the standard candle or satchel of potpourri, try decking out your bathroom with a bundle of fragrant dried herbs, like the lavender above. The herbs will keep your bathroom smelling clean and fresh, plus they’re as pretty as flowers to look at — and longer lasting too. Talk about a décor win-win.
Before you give your bathroom a décor overhaul, it’s a good idea to get everything organized — bathrooms are notoriously hard to keep tidy! Check out this post with tips on bathroom organization from ForRent.com to get started.
