The big day is here — it’s moving day. Don’t let this day stress you out, though; let’s talk about a few ways to make your next move a smooth transition. Here are five tips for a smooth move.
Get Organized
Start sooner rather than later and give yourself plenty of time to pack in an organized manner. You are going to want to pack each room individually to keep boxes organized, and label accordingly.
Make a Plan
No matter if you are moving across town or across the country, you need a plan of action. Will you be renting a moving truck, hiring a company or utilizing friends and family? Plan out the day you want to be loaded, giving yourself plenty of time to clean your old residence and prepare any personal matters you need to finish up. Waiting until the last minute can leave you forgetting important items.
Pack Well
Packing well makes a big difference on moving day. Be sure you are packing everything as tightly and as securely as possible, in both boxes and the moving truck. Try to not leave any empty spaces and find fillers so nothing will shift as you embark on your move — this is what leads to broken and damaged items upon arrival.
Create Moving Day “Kits”
If you are moving across the country, you will need to make preparations for any overnight stays in hotels, so be sure to have your suitcase and necessities set aside so they don’t end up in your moving truck. You will also need to create a kit for last-minute cleanup of your old residence. Keep out some basic cleaning supplies and anything you don’t mind throwing away before you leave.
Last-Minute Business
Before that moving day arrives, don’t forget about all those last-minute details, and make sure to keep all information with you for reference if needed.
- Ensure that if you have any pets, you’ve arranged care while packing or transportation, if necessary, during the move.
- Have your mail prepared to be forwarded to your new address.
- Keep all your important personal information easily accessible and with you at all times (Social Security information, bank information, etc.).
- Utilities: Make sure you have prepared cancellations for your old residence and hook-ups for your new residence.
