It doesn’t matter whether your home is rented or owned, large or small, storage always seems to be a problem. If we have more space, we accumulate more stuff!
My home is roughly 2000 square feet and includes five bedrooms. Although this sounds quite large, it actually equates to small rooms and even smaller closets. The house was built in the 1950s, and let me just reiterate that there are no large closets or extra space! I have had to be creative in rethinking how to make the best use of my home.
Decide on open versus closed storage
One of the first things to decide is how you want the storage to function. Do you want open or closed storage? Do you like using woven or plastic baskets or do you prefer tubs with a lid to protect the items inside? There are many inexpensive styles available from the dollar store, yard sales or thrift stores.
Use overlooked spaces
One of the most overlooked spaces in a home? Under the beds! This is a gold mine of empty space just waiting for you to store wrapping paper, canned goods, out of season clothes or even games and books. Use under bed plastic tubs or save cardboard boxes that will fit the opening.
My husband also added narrow shelves to a back hallway in our home for his collection of CDs. They are now out of the way but still accessible, should he need them.
Think outside the box
You may possibly have more closet space than needed, so why not add an organizer or shelves to a closet and store a multitude of items? When my oldest son went to college, I claimed his unused bedroom for my craft space. I crammed every nook and cranny full to store my massive collection of scrapbook paper and supplies. I added a wooden shoe organizer, shelves and boxes to the closet and labeled everything with the ever popular chalkboard tags. I even took the door off the closet because the organization looks great and performs even better!
You may not want to use your closet for craft supplies like me, but what about photo albums, books, files, pet supplies and more?
Additionally, most average rental properties come with limited options for bathroom storage. When we remodeled our very small bathroom, we shopped around to find the best storage solution for the shower. These shower caddies are solid and hold larger sized bottles than most others. They keep us both organized and cleaner!
Make your storage beautiful
Storage doesn’t have to be ugly. Take advantage of unused space above doors for both beautiful and clever ways to store your dishes, knickknacks or collections. Here, I’ve mixed in vintage family plates and teapots with yard sale bargains on this above-the-door shelf. Not only is it functional, but it also adds an element of personality to our kitchen.
Pare down your possessions
Of course, the best way to organize is have less stuff! A general rule that will help you keep your possessions under control (and not the other way around) is when you bring an item into your home, sell or give away another item. If you tend to be a hoarder, have someone you trust help you weed through the necessities and extras. Once you get organized, stay organized! Take the necessary time to keep your organization working for you.
