5 Easy Ways to De-Wrinkle Your Clothing — Without an Iron!

Apartment Living

For people who live in a cozy apartment, ironing clothes can feel extremely difficult, or even impossible. Putting out your ironing board and running it over all the clothes that need to be pressed is labor-intensive and takes a lot of time, not to mention a lot of space, with how large ironing boards are. The problem is, lots of jobs want you to keep your clothes free of wrinkles, which means you may be looking for easy ways to meet those standards without breaking out an iron and trying to use it somewhere in a smaller apartment. The thing is, it’s actually possible! We’ve compiled the five easiest ways to make sure you don’t have to deal with wrinkles in your clothing, but you also don’t have to wrestle with an iron.

Use a Makeshift Iron

A hair straightener works great if you have a pretty small piece of clothing, or clothing that doesn’t have a substantial amount of wrinkles. Put it on a heat setting that’s a little lower than you’d think it should be, then run it across the piece of clothing. Make sure not to clamp it on any specific portion of fabric for a very long time; you don’t want it to burn.
Another makeshift iron that’s easy to use is the bottom of a metal pot. Take a pot with a large bottom, fill it with water, and then leave it on the stove to boil. Once it boils, dump all the water out, then press the heated bottom of the pot across the clothing.

Try Wrinkle-Removing Sprays

There are plenty of commercial wrinkle-removing sprays that you can buy from the store and use directly on your clothing —most companies that sell detergent have one of them. However, you can also make your own.
An easy homemade spray is to mix up three parts of water and one part vinegar and put into a spray bottle. Spray the wrinkled portions very lightly, and hang to dry.
If you’re worried about the vinegar potentially leaving a lingering smell, try putting water and a little bit of fabric softener in a spray bottle. This one may need a bit more experimenting, but you should ideally be using a bit less than one part of fabric softener to three parts of water. Spritz the clothing, and hang to dry.

Try a Blow Dryer

If you’re working with a fairly light material, you can try a blow dryer to quickly and easily get rid of wrinkles. Fill a spray bottle with water, then very lightly spray your garment, making sure not to dampen it too much. Then, hold the blow dryer about ten inches from the clothing and go over it a few times, until the water dries. Be sure to keep the blow dryer moving, so you don’t burn or otherwise damage the clothes.

Use Steam

One of the biggest components of an iron is steam, which is why it’s a great idea to use a different kind of steam to make your clothing wrinkle-free. If you take a hot shower in the morning, do everything you can to close your bathroom off —put a towel under the door, close your windows, and turn off the air conditioning or fan. Then, put your clothes on a hanger and hang them somewhere in the bathroom, the closer to your shower the better. Take a hot shower, and when you’re finished, let your clothes dry outside the humid bathroom. No more wrinkles!

Use The Dryer

This one may seem a little counterintuitive —after all, the wrinkles likely came from the dryer. However, all you need to do is place a few ice cubes in with a couple articles of clothing, and let it tumble on a hot setting for about fifteen minutes. The ice cubes will melt, making it steamy inside the dryer, and as long as you hang the clothing up to dry when they’re done, the wrinkles will work themselves out! This is great if you have a dryer, and it works best with only a couple of clothing pieces.
