Finding storage when you’re renting can sometimes be a challenge, as many apartments have smaller kitchens and limited pantry space. Sometimes you have to look up to make the most of every inch available, including that awkward space above your kitchen cabinets. Once a haven for dusty faux plants, renters are discovering new ways to take advantage of that often overlooked space!
1. Baskets and Bins
You can find stylish baskets and bins in various shapes and sizes just about anywhere these days. But before you go shopping, first consider what you’ll be storing in them. Use them for items you won’t need every day, such as specialty appliances, food storage or baking supplies. Then measure how much space you have above your cabinets and look for baskets that will fit both the area and the items you need to store. Label them so you don’t forget what’s in there!
These wire baskets are large in area but narrow in height, which fits the space perfectly:
For smaller items, get creative. These vintage drawers hold small items I don’t use daily, such as certain spices and utensils.
2. Large Planters
Other creative items to use are long planters. They fit well in that narrow spot and hold quite a bit of “stuff.” I stamped the number 814 (a special date for me!) on this one to personalize it a bit. You could instead label it with what’s inside; for example, a stenciled “coffee” label would look cool and identify where you hid your extra filters and beans.
3. Cookbooks
Cookbooks can be tough to store in the kitchen, so why not harness the space above your kitchen cabinets? Some cabinets may be uneven, so you might need to place a plank underneath the books to keep them straight. Not only will your cookbooks now be handy, but they’ll look cool as well.
4. Wine
Wine should be stored horizontally, so the space above your cabinets is the perfect place for them. Just be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight or an area that will receive a lot of heat. (Don’t store them above the stove.) Inexpensive wine racks can sit in that space, allowing you to file away your wine bottles so they won’t roll or fall. Plus, this makes them easy to grab when needed.
5. Open Shelves
Open shelves are a huge trend in kitchen design right now. Replicate the look above your cabinets by showing off your best pieces while also maximizing storage. Again, you may need to place a plank to keep them straight, but it’s a great spot to tuck teapots, large bowls and other nice-looking pieces.
Once thought to be a waste, the space above your cabinets may be the key to finding extra storage in your rental kitchen.
