Apartment Safety 101

Apartment Living

So you’ve just moved into your new apartment, great! How exciting is this, a new start in a new place! When searching for apartments you only visited the ones you believe to be in safe areas; but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow a few extra safety precautions. Your new area should still be examined for any safety issues and you should still take certain safety measures to be safe. Here are a few tips we recommend.

  • Make sure the locks on all doors leading into your apartment have been changed since the last tenant moved out.
  • Always use the peephole when answering the door, even for people you know. If you don’t have a peephole, ask your landlord to install one.
  • Report bad lighting or overgrown shrubbery to your landlord. Landlords and managers have a million things to keep an eye on, and they may be too busy to notice a tampered lock, etc.
  • Be alert of your surroundings when walking to and from your apartment late at night, as well as when using common rooms such as the weight room, laundry room, etc.
  • Always lock your car and front door. Even if you’re just running out for a few seconds, better safe than sorry!
  • Purchase light timers and set them so that your lights turn on when you’re away from home in the evening or away on vacation. It would also be smart to inform a neighbor (or someone you trust) so they can be on the look-out for any suspicious behavior around your apartment.
  • And finally, consider getting a pet. Thieves hate pets, especially dogs! Any type of animal that makes loud noises when a stranger enters the apartment will do just fine. You’ll not only have a great safety feature but a new companion as well.
