San Francisco
In San Francisco, the average monthly rent is a cringe-inducing $3,213. Yikes.
For that amount, you could get:
-11 iPad Mini 2s at $269 each
-247 pounds of prime rib at $12.99 a pound
-A 7-night cruise to Tahiti for 2 ($2,999)
For a year of rent ($38,556), you could get:
-A fully loaded 2016 Jeep Wrangler
-7 jet skis
-One night in the Penthouse Suite at the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez, France, at $37,500 a night
Ouch, San Francisco. This hurts.
Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, the average monthly rent is $2,278. That’s less expensive than San Francisco but still not great.
For one month of rent in Los Angeles, here’s what you could buy:
-543 fast-food burgers at $4.19 each
-9 dogs at an adoption fee of $250 each
-One bottle of Krug champagne ($2,000)
For 20 years of Los Angeles rent — $546,720 — you could get:
-A pair of 2016 Lamborghini Huracans at $245,940 each
-13 nights in the Hilltop Estate at Laucala Island Resort, Fiji, at $40,000 a night
We’re thinking of finding a new city to live in.
New York
New York’s average monthly rent is $3,642 (!), making Los Angeles and San Francisco look cheap by comparison.
For a month of New York rent, you could get:
-3 nights in the Plaza Hotel at $945 a night
-3,060 Taco Bell Crunchy Tacos at $1.19 each
-A professional 7-piece drum kit ($3,122)
For 5 years of rent — $218,520 — you could get:
-Two 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class luxury automobiles at $109,000 each
-A personal chef for 5 years
New York rent prices are truly ridiculous. We’ll take the crunchy tacos, please.
Chicago
In Chicago, the average monthly rent is $1,942; not too bad for a big city. We’re looking at you, New York.
For a month of Chicago rent, here’s what you could get:
-14 lobster dinners for two at $130 each
-19 tickets to Disneyland at $99 each
-A flight to Kathmandu ($1,900)
For 20 years of rent ($466,080), you could get:
-6,214 personal training sessions at $75 each
-A used 52-foot yacht at $465,000
Not too shabby.
Seattle
In Seattle, the average monthly rent is $1,834, which we can get behind.
For that amount, you could get:
-10 bottles of Dom Perignon champagne 2005 at $169.99 each
-A 1-carat diamond necklace ($1,819)
For 5 years of rent ($110,040), you could get:
-64 Louis Vuitton duffle bags at $1,716 each
-A Tesla Roadster automobile at $101,500
That’s not as crazy as what you could buy with New York rent, obviously. But still, we’d love to not pay rent for five years and get a Tesla instead.
Minneapolis
The average monthly rent in Minneapolis is a pretty affordable $1,259.
For that amount of cash, you could get:
-A Chanel tweed skirt suit ($1,195)
-A leather sectional sofa ($1,249)
For 5 years of rent ($75,540), you could get:
-A year-long trip around the world
-A jet turbine-powered powerboat
One trip around the world, please.
Washington, D.C.
In our nation’s capital, the average monthly rent is $1,989.
For a month of rent, you could buy:
-38 Amazon Kindles at $49.99 each
-A 9-piece teak dining set ($1,839)
-A Dolce & Gabbana bag ($1,895)
For 1 year of rent ($23,868), you could get:
-A 2016 Honda Accord LX at $23,905
-3 Sharp 90-inch Aquos HD 1080p TVs at $6,629 each
The takeaway: We should all stop paying rent. (just kidding)
Now, please excuse us while we move back in with our parents and purchase 3,060 tacos.
