When I had a dorm, my bathroom had zero storage in it. I had two towel bars and that is it. There was plenty of storage space in a cabinet under the sink…outside of the bathroom. What happens if you need an emergency new roll of TP? Or the plunger? How awkward is it when you don’t have lady supplies close at hand when you need them? So I thought to myself, “How can I make this work?” Then it hit me…build something that would fit over the back of the toilet against the wall that would provide all the shelving and storage I need!
Then a second wave of brain power hit and reminded me that I was in a dorm, not an apartment, and whatever I built I would have to carry out at the end of the year. That killed my creative streak, but it doesn’t have to kill yours! Here are some ideas for a bathroom storage unit.
- Make sure that if you are making a unit for above your toilet, to allow room for someone to sit comfortably, without being in danger of hitting their head. Build it tall(ish) and not too deep.
- For emergency items (extra TP in case someone forgot to replace the roll), build the bases on either side of the toilet to have shelving. This way you can store your items within easy reach.
- Don’t build it too high. If you include storage in the “legs” of the unit, you shouldn’t need much storage above. The higher you go, the harder to clean, stock, and use. Plus, standing on a toilet is kind of dangerous.
- It doesn’t have to be fancy. Just stain or paint the wood whatever would look good in your bathroom and that is all you need.
- Consult DIY YouTube videos if you get stuck. Videos like that are majorly helpful sometimes!
