#Adulting: How Often To Clean Your Apartment

Apartment Living

After renting that sweet new apartment, it may be devastating to figure out that it won’t stay looking nice unless you take some time to clean it. Not only will having a clean apartment give you #adulting points, but you’ll be more likely to invite friends over for a potluck Netflix marathon. Here’s the low-down on how often you should be cleaning.

Cleaning the Kitchen
Food and germs are not a good combination, so this is an important room to keep up with. Wash the dishes daily, or at least several times a week. Keep in mind that handwashing uses 6 ¾ times as much water as a dishwasher, on average.
Take out the trash as needed. And while we appreciate the creative trash stacking, it’s important to ask, how does it smell? For counters and other surfaces, clean as needed. Try using disposable antibacterial wipes.
To deal with the fridge, spot clean as needed, and toss old leftovers once a week. Every 3-4 months, give it a deep cleaning.

  • Wash Dishes: Daily (Or at least several times a week)
  • Take out the trash: As needed
  • Counters and surfaces: As needed
  • Deep clean the fridge: Every 3-4 months.

Linens
Did you know that bath towels can carry more bacteria than many other household items? Wash them every 3-4 uses so you don’t have a science experiment.
For bed linens, wash your sheets weekly, give or take. Every 3-6 months, do a bigger batch of laundry to wash your comforter or duvet. If your pillows are machine washable, wash them on the same schedule of every 3-6 months. Some people find it helpful to do a big batch of cleaning when the seasons are changing.

  • Towels: Wash every 3-4 uses
  • Sheets: Weekly
  • Blankets and pillows: Every 3-6 months if yours are machine washable

Other Apartment Cleaning
Keeping the bathroom clean is an important part of adulting. And if you’re living alone in your one-bedroom rental, you can’t even take turns with a roommate. Clean the bathroom weekly. Just put on your favorite playlist and get it done.
For the rest of the apartment, vacuum, sweep and dust every 1-2 weeks. Small amounts of dirt can add up in a big way.
And don’t forget to clean your desk regularly. The average desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet bowl. Gross!

  • Clean the bathroom: Weekly
  • Vacuum, sweep, dust: Every 1-2 weeks
  • Clean your desk: Regularly
