DIY Patriotic Wreath

Apartment Living

Kelly, from Here Comes the Sun, is back with ForRent.com to show you another great DIY project for summer!
With all the decorating that goes on inside your house or apartment, the outside sometimes gets neglected. Decorating your front porch or door is a great way to welcome guests. There are many ways to spruce up your outdoor space but my favorite way is to decorate with wreaths. Today, I’m going to show you how to make the perfect wreath that you can keep up all summer…a Patriotic Wreath.

I like this wreath because you can put it up for Memorial Day and leave it up until the end of July. I’m decorating my back porch in a red, white and blue theme this year and this Patriotic Wreath will make the perfect addition to my decor.
To make this wreath, you will need:
12″ metal wreath form
Red, white, blue and/or patriotic-themed fabric
Scissors or a rotary cutter
Cut your fabric into evenly sized strips. Mine were approximately 2″ wide by 12″ long. You can make them wider and longer, depending on how you want your wreath to look. For this wreath, I used approximately 90 strips of fabric.
Thread the fabric through the wreath form and tie in a double knot. Work your way around the wreath form until it is filled with fabric.

You can choose to create a pattern or randomly mix your fabric colors like I did. This project is a great way to use up extra fabric scraps.

This wreath holds up very well if your porch has an overhang that will keep the wreath safe from the rain. I have had my wreath for 3 years and there is no sign of mildew. If your wreath will be exposed to moisture, consider using outdoor fabric.

In addition to the front door, this wreath can also be used on enclosed porches for seasonal decoration or indoors. Here is mine against the brick wall on our back porch.
