Today, the ForRent.com DIY expert, Jon from the Sew Woodsy blog, stops by to show you how to make your own custom DIY tin can lanterns. It’s an easy and unique way to spruce up your winter décor in your apartment!
You Will Need:
- Tin Cans (as many as you need for your chosen phrase)
- Black Marker
- Drill with 1/16th and 1/8th Drill Bit
- Metal File
- Paint (if desired)
- Tea Lights
Directions:
First, start by figuring out what you want your lanterns to say. Collect as many cans as needed to complete your phrase and clean them thoroughly by soaking them in hot water and then peeling the labels off. Next, take your marker and mark dots in the shape of the letter going on each can. Start by drilling each dot with the 1/16th drill bit to get the holes started, then go back with the 1/8th drill bit to widen each hole. After the drilling is done, take a metal file and file down each drilled hole so that there aren’t any sharp edges or burrs. After that, simply put your favorite tea candle (battery powered or traditional) in each can and watch your DIY lanterns come to life!
