Dorm Room Decor to Die For

Apartment Living

Going to college and moving into a dorm is one of the best experiences of a young adult’s life. However, many dorm rooms and suites are very…blah. How do you turn a dim, generic room into one that adequately expresses your personality? ForRentUniversity.com is here to help! See below for tips and tricks on dorm room decor.
1) Create your own headboard! It’s very simple. You just need some foam, cool push pins, and fabric. Want to go a step further and create curtain headboards for a more regal look? Check out the Do It Yourself: Curtain Headboards tutorial!
2) Bring a little bit of nature into your dorm. Pick flowers to put in a bright, fun vase. They not only bring a fresh scent to your room but are sure to bring a smile to the faces of visitors.

Include flowers to brighten up any room!

3) Get bright with twinkle lights! Light strands are not only for the holidays. Pin them up on the wall by your bed, above your desk, over the door…anywhere. They can make a great night light, especially when using a firefly mason jar lantern, and they add a bit of festivity to your dorm room.

4) Use unique photo displays! If you have tons of pictures you’d like to put on display but not enough frames, try a more unconventional way of showing off your pics. Attach them to clothespins and hang on a string. Guests to your room will love checking out pictures of your friends, family, pets, vacations, etc., displayed in this unique way.
5) Maximize space to its fullest potential! Many dorm rooms are small – really small! One way to create more space is to get the beds off the floor. You (and your roommate) can loft your beds to create more floor space for chairs, a mini-fridge, a futon, and whatever you need. Just be careful getting in and out of bed!
6) Add warmth and color for those feet! No one likes a cold floor, and no one likes looking at plain old linoleum either. Get a bright, fun rug to liven up the room. You can even create your own.
7) Add personality to all areas of your space! Closet space tends to be almost nonexistent in dorm rooms. It is not very visually appealing to have clothes and shoes spilling out of that tiny space on your wall. Hang a cute shower curtain or window drapes to conceal your closet and make your room look less cluttered. Simply pick out your favorite shower curtain or drapes, get a rod, and hang it up in the closet door space!
