We are very excited that Kelly From Here Comes the Sun has stopped by to share with us some of her (awesome) rental decor solutions!

Hello! My name is Kelly and I blog at Here Comes the Sun where I share easy and affordable DIY home decor, recipes and crafts. I’m thrilled to be here at ForRent.com to share my tips for their Rent Pretty Series. I thought our time in our current rental would be a year at most but here we are 2.5 years later. For the first year, I did not decorate much at all because I was clueless on how to add color to a space that I could not paint. I’m sure many of you know this feeling.

Most rentals come in boring, blah, beige. Seriously, I think that should be the official name of the color. But just because your home has beige walls doesn’t mean your home has to be blah. Think of the walls as your neutral blank canvas. What can you put against your canvas that will really pop?

In our home, my Yellow Chevron Curtains make the biggest impact. They really make a statement and add such a pop of color.

I love the way they look against our gray couches. Gray and yellow is one of my favorite color combos at the moment.  All you need to make curtains like these is a gallon of paint in the color of your choice, painting supplies, a square and some curtains.  I chose a flat finish paint but you can experiment with other types of finishes too.  The curtains are basic white curtains from IKEA. You can find the full tutorial here. Choose a color and pattern that match your decor style and have fun with it!
Another area where you can bring in color without paint is with throw pillows. Changing your pillows out for each season or holiday gives your home a whole new look. I made these bright pillows to use on my summer porch.
The best part is…you don’t have to buy a ton of pillow forms. Buy a few forms and then recover your pillows using my tutorial for an Envelope Closure Pillow. If you are unfamiliar with an envelope closure, it allows you to easily take the pillow out and switch up the cover.
After summer is over, I take the covers off, store them flat and recover the pillow forms with new pillow covers.

Bringing color into your home doesn’t have to mean painting the walls. Go big, go bold, and make a statement. I’ll be back next Thursday with some Pretty Storage Solutions for your apartment!

Hello! I’m Kelly, creator of the blog Here Comes the Sun. My husband and I owned a home for seven years. Two and a half years ago, a job transfer took us out of state and now we rent. I’m currently in the process of making over our rental one temporary solution at a time. DIY is my passion and I love to share the projects that I do and the tips that I find.
