Epsom salt is not only good for a relaxing bath; it can also be used for cleaning in a variety of ways. The natural abrasive properties of Epsom salt make it perfect for cleaning surfaces around your home. We have four ideas for you to experiment with below, and you’ll likely be keeping Epsom salt on hand in your cleaning pantry after trying a few of them. Please note that you should always test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area before applying over the entire surface.
Do you have some really dirty pots and pans? Pour a small amount of Epsom salt onto the pan before you scrub it. Then use a sponge and the salt to rub away any stuck-on food easily. The abrasive nature of the Epsom salt will help remove that food without damaging the surface.
Epsom salt can also help clean the tile and grout around your home. Mix equal parts Epsom salt and liquid dish detergent for a tile and grout cleaner that will beat any store-bought mixture. Apply the mix to your tile in any room, allow it to soak for a minute or two, then scrub to remove dirt and grime. Rinse clean once complete and enjoy your clean tile surface.
Sometimes your washing machine needs cleaning. Yes, the machines we use to clean the things in our homes also need to be maintained. Laundry detergent and dirt can build up inside your machine, and it needs to be removed so your washer will run efficiently. Fill your empty washing machine (top load only) with hot water, then add one quart of distilled white vinegar and one cup of Epsom salt. Agitate the machine for about a minute, then allow the solution to soak in the machine for about an hour. Run the washer through the complete wash and rinse cycle, and it should be as clean as new!
Epsom salt can also be used to make your own DIY fabric softener crystals. Just mix one cup of Epsom salt with 10 drops of your favorite scent of essential oil. Keep this mixture by your washing machine and add ¼ cup per load at the beginning of the wash. Your clothes will be softened naturally by this mixture.
