Summer is in full swing and the planting has begun. One of my favorite things about summer (and spring) is the life it brings after winter. When I walk down neighborhood streets, it looks as though the trees and grass have woken up from a long nap and are ready to sing and stand there looking beautiful.
Decorating with live plants just brings something a little extra special to the table, but sometimes that takes a lot of time and effort. I’m all about those plants that don’t require excessive care!
Since it’s summer, I like to think of my outdoor spaces as an extension of my home. Just sitting outside on a patio is so relaxing that I think it’s important to help that little space bring an extra measure of joy and relaxation to your life. I recently built this DIY wooden planter so I could display a big, beautiful fern. If building isn’t up your alley, you can find all kinds of great planters at the hardware store. But I really do think it’s important to utilize that outdoor space while you can!
Ferns are such a low-maintenance plant, and they love the shade, so they’re a great choice if you have a covered patio space that needs a little sprucing! Keeping on track with low-maintenance plants, succulents are pretty awesome too, and there are quite a few varieties. I just adore these overflowing ones planted in mason jars. I also really enjoy layering things; with this mason jar, for example, I added in a candle lantern. It provides some dimension to the area that creates a very full look without being too cluttered.
I also like planting things in weird places. I made this DIY succulent planter out of a candleholder a while back, and it has been such a great conversation starter over the past year. Don’t be afraid to put plants in weird places. Maybe you have some old tea cups or a gorgeous bowl your grandmother gave you. Being risky with these live plants will give life to a beautiful old heirloom. There are so many things you could use to house an indoor plant! Get creative and shop your own house to save tons of money!
Where are some of your favorite places to keep live plants? I love to have them in my living room to brighten up the space! If you are new to plants, here is a great list of the Best Plants for Apartment Living. There are lots of choices out there, with some bigger and some smaller, but these are some of the best to start with! Have fun and enjoy your new plants!
