The Battle of Cats versus Dogs

The Battle of Cats versus Dogs

Pets can be a wonderful and therapeutic addition to your lifestyle. If you have decided upon getting an animal, which do you go with: cat or dog? While many people favor either cats or dogs, there are some people who are borderline about which furry friend to include in their lives. Consider these variables when choosing between a cat and a dog:
  • Dog requires more time – Although both cats and dogs require your time and commitment, dogs will require more time if training is necessary. Taking the dog to training classes and socializing the dog might cause conflicts if you have a busy schedule.
  • Cat might be less companionship – By nature, most dogs are more sociable and dependent than cats. Cats can entertain themselves and enjoy times of solitude. This might work in your benefit if you work during the day or are absent for long periods of time.

  • Breeds in both cats and dogs shed – If you or your roommates do not like shedding animals, look for breeds that don’t shed. Also, both cats and dogs can cause allergies, although cats are more likely to trigger allergy symptoms.
  • Cat will be less maintenance – Along with time, cats generally require less maintenance than dogs. When leaving town for a day or two, cats might be alright with a neighbor maintaining their food and water supply, where as dogs will need more attention and regular walks.
Although these are only a few aspects of cat and dog ownership you should consider, they are variables and points of interest you should consider. Once you have weighed the pros and cons of cat or dog ownership and have evaluated your personal needs and wants in a pet, then the decision between a cat and a dog will become much easier.   Photos from: ericrichardson, Serlunar, Cubagallery and jpctalbot on flickr.com
