With the remote workforce on the rise, you might come across the opportunity to work from home in your career. While some would jump at the chance to work on the couch in their comfy sweats, some might be a bit hesitant about adjusting to the flexible, but sometimes lonely, lifestyle of a remote worker. While there are many benefits to working from home, there are a few drawbacks that might be a dealbreaker for some. Here are a few of the pros and cons of working from home.
Appearance
Pro: Not having to maintain a professional wardrobe saves money —and time getting dressed in the morning.
Con: You might start to put less effort in your appearance and find yourself wearing pajamas all day.
Personal Time
Pro: Increased flexibility with your daily schedule creates more time for family and personal interests.
Con: You might miss out on fun after work outings or co-worker activities, like happy hour, running club, etc.
Distractions
Pro: In the peace a quiet of your own home, you’ll avoid the distractions of a busy office and be more productive.
Con: You might have worse distractions at home, or even create your own if you don’t have the discipline to stay focused.
Commuting
Pro: No wasting time stuck in traffic or cramped subways while commuting to an office.
Con: While commuting is never fun, it does create a physical separation between the stress of home and work.
Interaction
Pro: Avoid small talk with coworkers you might not necessarily want to befriend, and stay out of office gossip and politics.
Con: Working from home can be isolating and by being out of the loop, there’s a chance you might miss out on career furthering opportunities.
