Have you ever dreamt of making a close encounter of the third kind? Do you long for the day you shake hands with an extraterrestrial or go toe to toe with a intergalactic bounty hunter? Of course you do! Making contact with alien life forms is something humans have been dreaming about for centuries. But unless you have access to some major satellites and a few billion dollars worth of government funding, the chances of it happening to an average person are pretty slim. According to the National UFO Reporting Center, there have only been 2,475 UFO sightings in the U.S. this year. That’s an awfully small number for a country that has more than 300 million people in it.
But don’t worry; even for those of us with no NASA training, there are ways to increase the likelihood that you will make alien contact in your lifetime. And it all starts with making the right move! Certain cities across the U.S. see way more alien activity than others. So if you’re ready for your big alien encounter, then transport yourself to one of these alien hot spots.
Los Angeles: People flock to Los Angeles every day in search of fame and fortune, and it seems aliens are no different. Since 1975, there have been 731 UFO sightings over the skies of tinseltown: everything from strange blinking lights to bright-colored fireballs burning up in the night’s sky. Some skeptics might tell you these otherworldly phenomenon are mere byproducts of Los Angeles’ high pollution rates. But a simple YouTube search for “Los Angeles UFO sightings” will bring up firsthand videos that look a lot scarier than searchlights bouncing off some smog.
San Diego: Aliens must love the sun, fun and lounging on the beach because Los Angeles isn’t the only West Coast city with a sky full of strange objects. San Diego has had 648 different UFO sightings since 1975, and believe it or not, they weren’t all during Comic Con. There are also clubs you can join if you want to stop waiting to see a UFO and actually hunt one down yourself. The San Diego UFO Society and the Legions of the Sky UFO Watch meet regularly in the city to discuss recent sightings and watch the sky for future ones.
New York City: The Big Apple is no stranger to strange visitors, both from this planet and others. Since 1975, there have been nearly 700 UFO sightings across the five boroughs, with the majority of them taking place in The Bronx or Brooklyn. Why those places, exactly? Maybe they heard about the pizza!
Roswell: While this sleepy little town in New Mexico may not have the most UFO sightings in the country (less than 50 in the last 40 years), it is home to the most famous one in history. In July of 1947, a strange flying disc was retrieved from a crash site near the Roswell airfield, and from there a legend was born. Some claim the disc was a weather balloon; others say it was a device used to monitor nuclear tests. But most believe it was a crashed alien spacecraft that the government has been covering up for decades. The town now has an entire industry revolving around the alleged sighting, including dozens of museums, gift shops and a yearly parade. If aliens are ever going to make contact with earthlings, they’d probably start in a place with this many believers.
Washington, D.C.: Aliens looking to make contact with our world leaders would probably want to start at our nation’s capital. That, perhaps, explains why Washington, D.C. has had more than 100 UFO sightings since the 1950s (a big number for a smaller city). A sighting over D.C. in 1952 led the CIA to form the Robertson Panel, a committee ordered to research and report on alien activity. Eventually it concluded the government should begin an education campaign dissuading people’s belief in UFOs. It’s said the reason is so callers would stop swamping emergency lines with false reports, but could the committee just have been trying to hide the truth?
