Warming Up Neutral Color Schemes

Apartment Living

Neutral color schemes are a great way to create a calm, soothing atmosphere.  But creating a successful room with a neutral color scheme can be a source of anxiety.  How do you make a room interesting without adding color?  That question is easier to answer than you might think.

Neutral Colors

The key to creating neutral rooms that are warm, comfortable and inviting is to incorporate one or more of the following elements: texture, natural items, and small doses of subtle color.

Neutral Texture

The use of texture is one of the easiest ways to add dimension and interest to a neutral color scheme.  Try pairing a chunky knit throw with crisp cotton, or nubby linen with soft, smooth silk.  The different finishes provide a rich and varied canvas for your neutral palette.

Neutral Natural Element

Natural items are easily incorporated into a neutral color scheme.  Warm woods add depth and interest.  Add rustic baskets or woven fiber rugs to incorporate both nature and texture in one item.  Plants are also a perfect addition to neutral color scheme.

Neutral Colors

This brings us to the last element:  subtle color.   A neutral color scheme does not have to be entirely devoid of color.  Adding small touches of subtle color helps to brighten the room and warm up the neutrals, varying the intensity of neutral shades works in a similar manner.  Try pairing cream with charcoal or chocolate brown.  Or consider a punchy palette of black and white.   Either way, varying the palette a bit will easily warm up a neutral color scheme.
Neutral color schemes are a great way to create a cohesive feel in a home.  By adding texture, natural items and subtle color you can guarantee a warm and inviting space that will beckon you to put your feet up and relax.
