Creative Lighting Options to Replace a Dull Floor Lamp

Home Decor

Our normal go-to for lighting is almost always a floor lamp.
Sure, they are functional, but they can sometimes be an eyesore and, frankly, quite boring.
Creative Lighting
Getting creative with accent lighting is not only a fun and creative way to add interest to a space, it also makes an area seem more at home and welcoming. And at the end of the day, you have a custom, one-of-a-kind fixture.

Let’s run through a few ideas for using unexpected materials and their ideal placement.
1. Kitchen Items
I simply love this whole-heartedly.
At first glance, you would think it was merely a fabulous, mesmerizing light fixture. But as you get closer, you realize it’s actually a giant, industrial whisk.
How awesome is that? And how easy it is to do!
You have two options when it comes to installing the light. First, add in a light cord and hardwire it to the ceiling (or if you are renting, simply switch it out but save the original light to switch back to when you move out).
The second option is to grab a light cord that plugs in and add a hook to the ceiling, draping it down over a certain area.

2. Wooden Marquee Sign
I have a pretty big soft spot for kids’ spaces, and this room just about stole my heart.
By placing a marquee light in a space, you are adding some of the best accent lighting in the room.
Simply project an image or a word onto a thin piece of plywood and cut it out. Drill holes to add in the lighting, sand and paint with the color of your choice.
Run the lights through the holes (LEDs are preferred around children because of heat) and either attach or lean against the wall.

3. Copper Table Lamp
I love the simplicity of this lamp. It’s one you can make in an afternoon and use on a shelf, table, desk or nightstand.
Copper is still trending right now and is a great visual element in a space. The concrete bottom adds texture to the fixture. You can mix it up and add color to the concrete and/or the pipe.

4. Initial Letters
These little customized lights are a great way to personalize a space and add a bit of fun in too.
By combining one strand of outdoor lights, heavy cardstock, chipboard letters and paper cake plates, the illuminated letters light up the entire room and draw you into the space.
Don’t want to hang them on a wall? Forget about the background and just work with the letters. Paint to the color of your choice and place on a shelf, table or armoire, or else lean them in a window or on the floor.

5. Industrial Wall Lamp
This is another affordable, simple yet striking DIY that can be finished in an afternoon.
By following the directions on the lamp kit, you can wire it and wrap the jute around the cord. While that is drying, assemble a simple wall frame to hold the light.
A group of these would look fabulous together on a wall and serve as an art piece.

6. Strand of Lights
The options are endless for this. And extremely affordable.
Take one strand of holiday lights, however long you need, and drape them anywhere.
They were wound to the support bar on this chair to add in welcome accent lighting and provide a bit of reading light.
