Celebrate the Nation’s independence in a big way by using red, white, and blue to decorate this Fourth of July. You can fly your flag and put on one awesome party like you probably do every year, but you can also bring the celebration indoors for the summer by adding elements to your home’s décor. Start with an area that is seasonally decorated, such as a mantel. You can stop there or go further. Follow these 5 simple tips below to decorate in red, white, and blue the easy (and inexpensive) way!
-
Start with things you already own. Pull from other areas of your home. Grab things that are red, white, or blue and put them in the area you want to decorate. Don’t leave anything out! Go through the kids’ toy boxes, think about vintage items tucked in closets, craft stashes, fabric, linens, and even plain items that you can dress up for the holiday.
-
Make minimal purchases. You don’t want to spend all of your money on seasonal décor. Drop by the dollar store and pick up a few additional items. Grab a few inexpensive scrapbook items from the craft store. Think stickers, chipboard shapes, and seasonal paper. You will also need some fabric to create a runner or cover the surface. You may have already found those in your stash above. Otherwise, get creative and try fabric by the yard, inexpensive napkins, or even bandanas – which also come in red, white, and blue.
-
Make yourself and your home happy. Make sure the entire scheme fits in with your home décor. The style of seasonal décor should reflect the rest of your home so that you (and your home) are happy. Do you have a vintage vibe in the rest of your home? Be sure to continue that in any seasonal decorations. Does modern décor make your heart sing? Add red, white, and blue with a modern spin. Just because that inspiration picture online looks great does not mean it will make you happy when added to your home. Be sure whatever direction you choose that it fits your style!

Go red, white OR blue. Not up for a patriotic extravaganza? You can go with one of the solid colors and add in a few flags. People will get the message, yet you will still love the look (remember #3!). An all-white display can look elegant in any home and the addition of a few American flags will let people know that you are celebrating freedom.

Don’t forget the flag. What is a red, white, and blue display without the flag? Please remember the rules for displaying the flag, then wave it proudly inside and outside your home.
I always start with my mantel and go big! The kids love a seasonally decorated mantel, so I try to vary it up throughout the year. For the Fourth of July, be sure to add in a flag (or three), plus other patriotic décor items. You can try your hand at simple craft projects as well, such as those patriotic candle wraps on the mantel above. Remember I said to pull items that are already in your home that fit the theme as well. In my home, nothing is safe from this theory. I will add in everything from toy tractors to vintage coke bottles. All of these items scream Americana to me.
Don’t forget the everyday items as well. A simple white framed chalkboard can be used season after season. Add in a few embellishments from the scrapbook department of the local craft store and you have seasonal décor. Don’t miss this entire video on changing up a simple chalkboard for the seasons.
Once you have all the red, white, and blue you can stand on the inside of your home, be sure to start planning for your patriotic party. Again, pull elements you already have around your home that fit in with your red, white, and blue theme. Add in a few crafts or patriotic items purchased from the store to round out your tablescape. Be sure to bring in table lighting for the center of your tables with candles or lanterns. A festive table runner or cloth would be a great addition as well. Try something subtle like the image below, especially if you are layering on tons of other red, white, and blue accessories.
Don’t neglect your party table, even if it is just going to be a buffet. Decorating in red, white, and blue can happen on the buffet table as well as the picnic table. Also, be sure to add in festive tableware like plates and napkins. You can easily add some removable decoration to a utensil caddy for even more patriotic fun.
Where will you add some patriotic fun to your home this summer? No matter if it is indoors or out, be sure to follow the tips above for easy and inexpensive décor. Decorating with red, white, and blue for the Fourth of July has never been easier!
