How to Add Some Summertime to Your Apartment Décor

Home Decor

I’m all about budget decorating and using my creativity to create a home I love. After the long winter months, I’m eager to throw open the windows and embrace the longer days of summer. Decorating-wise, that means looking for ways to incorporate new fabrics, accessories and colors into my home.
Summertime Coastal Decor
Winter decorating tends to be more subdued, with the emphasis on cuddling up on the couch and staying indoors. Summer is all about entertaining and enjoying good food and good friends.
One of the easiest ways to make the transition to summer is to use bright colors. Add some new throw pillows, removable slipcovers and a bold throw for starters. I love florals, and you can use traditional patterns or go a little more contemporary.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns, but stay with a common color scheme to help the styles coordinate together. Think about possibly purchasing removable slipcovers for furniture. The ease of cleaning may offset the price if your family includes small children. Then you can use the slipcovers through the winter season and just change out the pillows and throws.
If you use draperies in the winter, switch to sheers or valances in the summer for a lighter look. Since most rentals have neutral walls, you could also go bold in your choice of window fabrics and styles.

Accessories
The coastal or nautical style is always a hit for summer decorating. One of the easiest ways to incorporate this is through the use of shells. If possible, don’t spend money on these! They are free for the taking at any local beach. When we go on vacation, I have my kids hunt for the biggest ones they can find and use them in glass jars or in vignettes. The shells bring a little bit of the beach home with us. Some sand added to a mason jar with a tea light candle will bring a bit of the coastal touch to any room as well.

A string of lights hung outside from a balcony or deck adds a festive element to outdoor relaxing and entertaining. Also, don’t forget to add a fun wreath or decoration to your front door to welcome guests and other tenants.
Plants
Summer is the perfect time to let your green thumb shine! Your patio or balcony is the perfect place for nurturing a few plants during the beautiful warm weather of summertime.

Tomato or green pepper plants or spices like parsley or oregano can be both practical and beautiful. You can plant them either outside on a balcony or patio or inside where they can receive the necessary sun exposure. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and the beauty of living plants that also decorate your apartment. Use nontraditional containers like a watering can or paint a terracotta pot.
If you’re more of a flower lover, find out which plants are perfect for your rental environment. Take into consideration whether you are able to provide the necessary watering or have a neighbor who can help out. The best part of growing flowers is clipping and using them for centerpieces and arrangements inside.
