How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Space

Home Decor

Rugs! Whether you live in a small, medium or large space, rugs can play a large role in the flow and feel of a room. I could talk for hours about rugs (hee-hee). They are incredibly versatile and can add a focal point to a large room, allow you to create a smaller space within a larger one, and add color and texture to your décor.
Here are a few pointers on choosing the right rug for your space based on the size of your space, your style and different rug options.
Consider the Space and Furniture
First and foremost, does the room need a rug? Sometimes it can go either way, so weigh your options.
Living room style. Does it need a rug?
In looking at your room, ask yourself whether a rug will add to the space by making it feel larger or make the room feel smaller. Be sure to consider what size area rug you’d like as well. Keeping the room, furniture and rugs proportionate is essential. You want a rug to anchor the space, not overwhelm it.
For example, in this room (pictured below), a rug would make the space feel much smaller, so it’s best not to add one. It’s a smaller space, so an area rug would not be complementary (in my humble opinion).
Neutral rug for a smaller room is perfect. Keeps the space looking larger than it is.
In a dining room or breakfast room, a good practice is to use an area rug that matches the shape of your table. So if you have a round table, a round rug is a better match. It’s also said that a round rug in a square room softens up the space.
Consider Your Style
What is your decorative style? Rustic? Traditional? Contemporary? Now do you want to match that style or spice it up with a rug that will both complement your style and offer some diversity at the same time? Does that make sense?
When considering your style, think about what you might have in mind as far as the texture and material of your rug. For example, I love rustic décor, so if I had hardwood floors throughout my space, I would consider a jute or sisal rug. If your style is more contemporary, you might have furry rugs, animal prints or geometrics. However, you might consider going with something on the opposite end of the spectrum as well. Let’s say you have a contemporary vibe in your home; maybe you could try a more traditional rug to balance the space a bit more.

Experiment! As long as there is a reasonable return policy where you are looking to buy the area rug, there’s no reason not to experiment. You might surprise yourself and fall in love with something completely unexpected because it fits the space so well.
Think Outside the Box
Consider placing smaller rugs beside dressers to soften up the space and make it feel cozier. I added a fun scrap fabric rug to my workroom because it looked like a piece of artwork in front of my white dresser.
