How to Create an Office Space in an Empty Corner

Home Decor

For most people, especially if you rent your living space, having a separate room for an office isn’t an option. This can become quite frustrating, considering that a ton of people work from home, are in school online, have kids who need to Google questions for homework, pay bills online or are late-night Pinterest stalkers.
But you can, in almost any room, add a functional work space that won’t take up a ton of room. And still look good.

Most people start with a desk, but before we begin there, consider your computer.
Is it a desktop?
Is it a laptop?
How big is it?
Is your keyboard wireless? How much space does it take up?
This is pretty essential to know before you hit the ground running in search of a desk.

I chose this Mac for several reasons; I am a hardcore Apple fan, but I was also drawn to how slim it was. I needed something slim for the corner, and this fit the bill. I won’t get too techie on you (we will save that for a later post), but there are a ton of options for computers like this.
And if you are in need of task lighting, which I highly recommend when you place an office space in the corner, find a small desk or work lamp that has a bit of height to it so the light will shine down onto your workspace.
Another option to consider, depending on your use and storage needs, is a Macbook/laptop.

Let’s tackle the desk.
Measure out how much space you can spare, including room for a chair.
I chose a desk that had two drawers the same width and depth as the desktop because I needed to get as much storage space out of a slim piece of furniture as possible.
Thinking back to how big your computer is, consider how much desktop space you can utilize. I knew I needed to keep a pad of paper, my stapler, scissors, pencils, etc., within arm’s reach and didn’t want to dig in a drawer every few minutes. I grabbed a small egg crate to separate the small office needs. It’s perfect for scooping out items and tossing them back in.

I also grabbed a large branch that was outside after a storm and used two small nails to attach it to the wall. Using clothespins, I use it for my reminders and little important notes.

Find a chair you won’t mind sitting in for hours. And hours.
Many days of the week you can find me huddled in this corner, headphones in to block out the noise, typing away.
I opted for a chair with rollers to move around easily in and so its legs wouldn’t scratch my floor.
It’s also white leather, so spills are a breeze to clean up.

I used washi tape right above my pencils to hang pictures and my revolving to-do list so it won’t damage the wall and can quickly be updated and changed to a new list.
