The weather is getting cooler and the days are about to get shorter, but the surest sign that fall is upon us is all of the Halloween candy in stores! Whether you’ve got little kids or you’re just a kid at heart, get into the spirit of the season with some fun decorations for your home. At Modernize, we love inspiring holiday decorations that are unique to your style and budget-friendly. Check out our suggestions for easy decorations that won’t take up a lot of space but will get your entire community excited about Halloween. Just be prepared with the candy (no raisins, please), because your décor is definitely going to attract some attention!
Start Simple by Adding Spooky Décor to Your Door
Whether your front door opens to the outside or to an interior hallway, it’s a great place to showcase your Halloween spirit. Get creative with some basic craft supplies (construction paper, string, crepe paper), and you can create a festive, unique look with hardly any cost. Wrap your door in white crepe paper and create a mummy effect. Use white paper plates and black construction paper to create large, creepy eyes peering outside — googly eyes are fun for this, too! Adhere creepy crawly images like snakes or spiders — and don’t forget the webs! If you have a bunch of old Halloween masks (or can pick up some inexpensive plastic ones at the store), you could even cover your door in a variety of characters.

Add a Festive Yet Eerie Glow!
If you don’t want to fuss with strings of Halloween-themed lights — let alone purchasing them and figuring out how to plug them in while still being able to shut your door (does anyone else struggle with this?) — think about a jack-o’-lantern. Pumpkins are the traditional choice and fun to carve, but if you want your décor to stick out, why not consider some alternatives? Did you know that you can also carve and illuminate a pineapple, oranges, squash, turnips and potatoes? We think the pineapple looks particularly menacing! Plus, you can make a delicious fruit salad with the leftovers.

If your community advises against candles because of the risk of fire, check out battery light candles. You can also skip the food (and messy carving) altogether by drawing scary faces on empty milk jugs and hollowing out a small hole on the back side to insert the battery light candles — a safe, clean and super easy alternative!

Leave a Surprise Guest for Visitors
Every Halloween, my dad likes to dress up like a scarecrow and hang out quietly on a hay bale until unsuspecting kids come to the door, and then he runs after them! And my parents wonder why I still can’t watch scary movies, even as an adult! That said, there is something a little fun about an innocent scare. Add some witch legs under your welcome mat or have them coming out of a planter. For added amusement, place the witch’s discarded broom and hat nearby. If you want to be a little more interactive, create a giant spider web in front of your door (on the ground) with black tape. Attach a large fake spider to a remote control car and surprise visitors when they walk up to the door.

Hint That Something Mysterious Is Happening Inside Your Home
One of the thrills of trick-or-treating is not knowing what to expect when someone opens the door. Make your home a little more mysterious with a few fun features. Contact paper on a front window will make it look like it has been broken out from afar. Add a strobe light or a lamp with a red bulb nearby to draw attention to the window and make it look even more spooky. Turn on a CD of frightening noises like ghosts moaning or chains rattling to complete the effect.

Finally, don’t forget that one of the best ways to really make your home memorable on Halloween is to dress up! Get into the spirit with your favorite costume or create a silly, quick costume like a vampire (fake teeth and blood), kitty (cat ears), ballerina (tutu, of course)! If you’re enthusiastic about the holiday, your trick-or-treaters will be too!
