Most people want to keep up with and at least know what’s trending currently and what will be trending in the upcoming year.

A bit of what was trending in 2015 and previously is still hanging on, and we have some new frontrunners, which I am super excited about!
Clean lines, added texture, mixing metals and brass are back!

I want to cover kitchen spaces in this post, since that is the heart of any space. And let’s stick with timeless looks that are easy to achieve for anyone.

1. Open Living
The concept of open spaces that combine the living with the kitchen area is certainly not a new trend. People have been keeping an eye out for this style for years now. It certainly helps the feel of a smaller space to become larger. And entertaining is a definite, hands-down crowd pleaser. No one wants to feel cut off while they prepare appetizers for their guests.
My personal preference is to have a peninsula, island or something of the sort that provides a visual break from the living room to the kitchen, not to mention the added bonus of hiding the mess of the meal preparation. And if your space has a bar area, it is a giant plus. Not only does it add to the seating and entertaining space, it usually adds more workable countertop space.

2. Open Shelving
Open shelving is still having a huge moment. I have a little bit of a pitter patter when I see images like this one.

It definitely helps a space feel more open and lets light flood through. Open shelves also don’t have the weight that upper cabinets can add to a space.
If you are in a rental or just can’t pull the trigger on fully removing your upper cabinets, you can get a similar feel by simply taking the doors off your existing cabinets.

3. White Done Right
When you stick with one main color throughout a space, you achieve a cohesive feeling throughout the room.
White is always my first option when going this route. White will always be timeless, clean and energetic but calming and popular. White also makes a space feel visually larger than what it is, so it’s perfect for small rooms.

4. Texture
Layers upon layers upon layers. This is super hot right now, and not just for winter, with its layers of fur, throws and blankets.
I’m talking about adding in visual stimulation, something that draws your eyes and makes you want to reach out and feel it.
Seagrass, leather, greenery, wood … they all add a sense of warmth and personalization, and they make your home more inviting.

5. Geometric Patterns
If you can pick just one small thing to add to your kitchen right now that makes for an easy change and enables you to switch it up when you tire of it without dropping a ton of money, I would definitely say add some geometric patterns in. Geometrics are on fire right now!
If you can put in a backsplash, do that. If you aren’t that committed, find contact paper or throw down a rug. Then you can conquer two of these: texture and the pattern!
