Every year as Mother’s Day approaches, I ask myself what I can do for my mom that is extra special. All moms love to receive that beautiful bouquet of flowers, but sometimes we want to give something a little different, out of the box even. I love incorporating something special when I give a gift to a loved one. I want it to be something they can keep and cherish beyond the life of flowers. Today I’m going to share with you a creative way you can give flowers this Mother’s Day while providing a fun little gift they can cherish for years to come!
This DIY hanging mason jar vase is the perfect addition to any home. It brings in beautiful color and a simplicity that transcends all generations! Who doesn’t love mason jars? : )
This is such an affordable way to give flowers — and did I mention adorable? Let’s gather up some supplies:
- 1 piece of scrap 1×6 (painted or stained)
- 1 plant hook
- craft wire
- 1 mason jar
Taking your scrap piece of wood, find the center and attach your hook with 3/4” screws. Make sure to put your hook toward the top of the board so that when your mason jar hangs down, it is still in front of the wood. Your 1×6 is 3/4” thick, but since you will have the plant hook between the wood and the head of your screw, it works out to use the 3/4” screw length. But just to be sure, you should always double check or test your specific supplies on a scrap piece of wood.
Now we are going to add the craft wire to the mason jar so it can hang from the plant hook. I used 20 gauge craft wire and just wrapped it around the neck of the jar a few times. Then twist it to the end to make sure it doesn’t slip off. Next, give it a little slack to create the handle from which it will hang. To do this, just loop the wire over the top of the mason jar and wrap it around the neck of the jar again to secure it in place, twisting the wire as you go to tighten it.
Now just add a few favorite flowers that you know your mom will love and that will not only brighten her day once but will provide a beautiful vase that she will cherish for years to come!
A few other things you might consider placing in the mason jar are herbs, a garden set (seeds, etc.) if she likes to do her own planting or even succulents. Just remember that with plants and succulents, you will want to place some rock at the bottom to allow water to drain properly.
