How to Create a Table Setting Using Mason Jars

DIY

Sometimes all you need is a little paint and a dab of inspiration to create beauty in your home! This project is no exception. Using the classic, and extremely popular, mason jar, you can create an inexpensive and easy update for your table. Let’s get started!

First of all, grab some small, old, mismatched glass jars . These can range from leftover grocery store jars (such as ones for salsa or sauces) or original mason jars for canning repurposed for this project. The more raised detailing the better the jar will look when painted and distressed.

Use any paint you happen to have on hand. This can be arts and craft paints or even wall or furniture paint left over from a project. Since my husband is a painting contractor, we have plenty of paint to choose from! Simply use an inexpensive craft brush or whatever you have handy that will cover the glass surface.

I put four coats of paint on my jars, but since I knew I wanted to distress them I didn’t worry about them being perfect. Let dry at least an hour or two in between coats (look at the paint directions to make sure.) Distress the mason jars with sandpaper, especially over the raised glass areas.

Take the jars outside, and add a coat of Diamond Dust Glitter Blast paint from Krylon if desired. I like bling so the extra touch of sparkle adds just the right touch!!

While the paint is drying, grab some silverware and bind it together with burlap strands (or string, ribbon or whatever is handy). Fold a paper napkin in half, and lay on top of a wide piece of ribbon cut to wrap around the silverware.

Set the silverware and napkin on top, and attach the ribbon to the bundle.

The mason jars look cute as a button with the silverware inside and are perfect for a fall table. You can even dress up plastic silverware and use for a kids party.

A closeup shot of the jars shows you how fun the distressed look turned out.
