The secret weapon? A small 6” ruler! Crazy, right?
Inexpensive Abstract Canvas Art Secret Weapon
Yes, that 6” ruler will be the key to this masterpiece! Let’s grab all of our supplies and get started, shall we?
Supplies:

  • Canvas, size of choice
  • Rulers
  • Acrylic Paint, in colors of choice
  • Sponge brush for each color
  • Pencil, optional

Now that we have our supplies, we’re all set to go! This is a very simple project with a very simple technique. Eeeks! I’m so excited.
First things first; let’s talk about our game plan. If you’re not the wing-it type, you might want to sketch out an idea of what you’re looking to accomplish. That’s where the handy dandy pencil comes in. You can then erase the lines when done and change your mind along the way. It’s a great option if you’re more of a planner. That would be me {smile}. I had a few of these rulers, so I kept playing around with what I was going to do … I’m a terrible perfectionist #facepalm. Can you relate to me?

I then got started by preparing my work area and paint. I like to use plastic lids (from Cool Whip containers) when painting for easy cleanup. So I set up two little stations for each color and primed up my rulers.
We’re officially ready to start painting! YAY!! You’ll start by placing a fair amount of paint onto your ruler. The thicker you have the paint on your ruler, the more texture you’ll see on your canvas.
Once you’ve “painted” your ruler, you’re going to place it (paint side down) onto your canvas and gently press down. Carefully remove your ruler from the canvas and ta-da!

Isn’t that perfectly imperfect and abstract? You’ll continue this process by alternating colors until your piece is complete. Another great option to consider is layering the colors. You can have a lot of fun with the colors, layering and placement!
After you’ve completed your placement, your work is done!
