DIY Side Table That's Perfect for Your Small Space

DIY

Sometimes it’s fun to use something in a different manner than what it was originally intended for. Don’t you agree? It’s even better when it’s super functional. So how about using an ordinary wooden crate for a side table? It can serve a two-fold purpose: as a side table and a means for storage of magazines, pillows, books, etc. Yes, please!

I have some even more exciting news: This project is super-duper simple! Once we grab a few supplies, we’re already halfway there.
DIY Side Table Stain
Supplies for DIY Side Table:

  • Wooden crate
  • Wood stain
  • Rags or paintbrush
  • Gloves (for staining)

You’re simply going to apply stain to your crate. The color of your stain and how dark you want it to be will determine how many coats you’ll put on. Be sure to let the stain completely dry before applying an additional coat.
I used a weathered oak stain on my crate and applied several coats to achieve this look. The weathered oak goes on fairly light on the first coat but will allow you to strategize how many coats you’ll need. Another favorite stain of mine is branded Provincial, though it’s much darker.
DIY Side Table Turn a Crate
Once you’ve applied your stain and it’s completely dried, you’re ready to move it into your space! Ours is used as a side table by our couch; however, you can also see how it serves as a magazine holder too. I think you could store pillows, books, games and so much more.
DIY Side Table Decor and Storage
Stand it on its side (vertically, as pictured) and you can use the top for holding drinks, books, reading glasses, etc. This is a perfect piece for small spaces and can easily be moved from room to room or to your new home. Stack two on their sides (horizontally) for more height or two vertically for more storage. You could even add caster wheels to the crate for wheeling around your space. Oh, the possibilities!
I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’m currently working on a DIY ottoman/coffee table using these exact crates. I’m excited for the extra storage too!
I love this piece in our home and all the possibilities crates offer! Here’s to crates that can serve as versatile pieces and easy DIYs.
