Have you ever moved into a new home or apartment and had all those bare walls staring back at you? I have personally moved five times over the last few years, and I think it took me the first four moves to realize that curtains are one of the easiest things to make your new place start to feel like a home. If you’ve been to the stores lately, you might have noticed that curtains can be a costly expense. Today I’m going to show you how I hang curtains for only $5 per panel! If you don’t have any hardware in place, you will need to hang some curtain rods, but we are going to cut the cost of curtains approximately 75%.
Are you ready for the big secret? They are twin-sized flat sheets. Yup, that’s it. At Walmart, you can get twin flat sheets for right around $5. I love how white curtains brighten up a room, so that’s what we went with in our living room, but there are tons of colors to choose from not only at Walmart but any store that would sell sheets. Many stores offer fabulous printed sheets, so if you’re looking for a little more flair in your curtains, just grab your favorite print!
After your curtain rod is hung, all you’ll need is the curtain rings to hang the sheets with. Since these are sheets and not actual curtains, there isn’t a pocket to hang them from. You might notice the sheets are a little longer than your window, but here’s another little tip: You always want your curtains hung high. It makes the room feel much more open and spacious. So don’t feel like these need to rest right above the frame; take them up to the ceiling! There might still be a little length left over; I simply folded over any excess fabric and clipped the curtain rings on the folded edge to hide it.
Now you can sit back and enjoy your new home with new privacy — and pick yourself up something special with all that money you saved!
Do you have any special tips or tricks for hanging curtains? We would love to hear about them! And if you’re wanting to get a little more crafty, check out this tutorial on making DIY custom curtains.
