DIY

If you have an existing desk or can find one at a secondhand store, there are some low-cost ways to update it that you need to know about. These ideas will change up the look of any plain-Jane desk to something special. You can do these updates on a budget, and most of the ideas require little to no DIY skills.

The easiest update you can do to any desk is to change out the hardware. Get rid of any dated knobs and pulls, and replace them with something a little more your style. You will be surprised just how quick and easy this change can be and what a big impact it can have on the overall look of the piece. Be sure to measure the hole spacing on the old pulls or take one of them to the hardware store with you. Then it’s just a matter of picking up something that is your style with the same hole spacing. This simple DIY project is as easy as using a screwdriver to remove the old hardware and install the new.

You can also change up the color of any desk for an instant update. There are a few ways to accomplish this:
1. Buy a roll of contact paper or removable wallpaper and add it to the desk. Here we have added it just to the top, but the drawers, sides and more are fair game too. Just trim to size, then peel and stick your way to an updated desk in minutes.
2. You can always paint any wood surface. Be sure to sand down your existing desk and clean it really well. Then paint with chalk paint or a paint and primer in one. A few coats is all you need for an amazing-looking desk that will fit great in any space.
3. Decoupage has been around for years and it is the perfect way to update a desk. Use a fabric or paper that will work in your space and decoupage it to the top, sides and more. Be sure to go over the top with multiple coats or a good varnish for a desk that will last.

You can also turn a small desk into something much bigger with a more involved DIY project. Adding a hutch can provide needed storage on a budget. You can use reclaimed wood to build cubby holes like in our example. You might even try stacked crates to get this look for a fraction of the cost.
