Make Your Own Watercolor Marbled Mugs

DIY

Watercolor Mug Final
I don’t know about you, but I’m always attracted to objects that pops with color. That’s why I love to make colorful things that will bring a smile to my face (and hopefully yours). To me, these mugs do just that.
Each morning, without fail, I have a cup of tea. So I thought I’d cheer up my mornings with this super simple DIY project. It’s a great way to personalize your kitchen, especially when you live in a rental. You don’t always have to personalize the walls with pops of color; you can customize your objects.
What’s amazing about this project is that you don’t just have to stop at mugs. You can venture out into bowls, vases, iPhone cases and whatever else you can think of! Anything made with this simple technique is a great and inexpensive gift idea, too. Fill the mugs up with candy and pass them out to coworkers on their birthdays, or marble a dollar store vase and put flowers in it for your mom for Mother’s Day.
Watercolor Mug Materials
Materials:
-Plain ceramic mugs
-Nail polish
-Plastic container
-Warm water
-Mod Podge
-Foam brush
-Plastic gloves
-Nail polish remover (to clean up any messes you may make)
Instructions:
Watercolor Mug STEP 1
Step 1: Put on your plastic gloves; otherwise you can easily mess up your manicure. Pour nail polish in a plastic tub full of warm water. The nail polish will mostly spread out over the water, though some will drizzle down to the bottom of the container. That’s okay. Leave it there.
(To be honest, it took me some time to get the hang of it. I messed up the first mug. So be sure to have extra mugs on hand. Who knows, though; you might be a master at this.)
Watercolor Mug STEP 2
Step 2: Work swiftly here, because the nail polish will quickly create a film over itself. Also, don’t move the nail polish too much or it will clump up and you’ll have to start over. Gently dip your mug into the water. Like magic, the nail polish will adhere to the cup instantly, leaving barely anything in the water. I was wowed how the nail polish clung to the mug.
Watercolor Mug STEP 3
Step 3. Let dry.
Watercolor Mug Step 4
Step 4: Coat the mug with Mod Podge to seal it. Let dry.
Please note: Be sure to only wash the mug by hand. This mug is not dishwasher friendly! There is, however, dishwasher-safe Mod Podge that may work. I’ve never tried it, but if you’re feeling up for the challenge, give it a shot and let us know if it works.
