Every year right around February, I’m always ready for winter to politely wave goodbye as it steps aside for spring to float on in! But in reality, there are still weeks and weeks left in winter, and I’m left dreaming of colorful blooms and flip flops! This is always such a difficult time to decorate too. The holidays are over but spring isn’t here yet; what do you do? Right around spring, I like to bring some pieces in that will get me through until the next holiday season! Today I’ve got a few tips and tricks on how to make the most of your decor and get you through those transitional times!
This centerpiece was made with things I found around the house from past projects, but all the items here are so easy to come by! I started out with this wooden tray. It was originally unfinished, and I stained it a light brown color. I love using trays because they allow me to easily move the centerpiece from the dining table onto the counter, freeing up that much-needed space! I’ve done table decorations where everything was just laid out on the table, and it always seemed to get in the way, especially when we had company over.
Something else I love is bringing in the natural elements, but let’s be honest … succulents are referred to as indoor plants that you can’t kill. Well, I kill them. True story! When you are busy all day, then come home, make dinner and tend to your family, all you want to do is relax at the end of the day, right? I sure hope I’m not the only one who has killed succulents! If you are a black thumb like me, these adorable fake succulents I found at the Dollar Tree are the perfect solution for you! They came in little white plastic pots, but I wasn’t crazy about the container, so I just removed the succulent from the Styrofoam and placed it in a mason jar filled with Spanish moss.
Mason jars are something I LOVE to keep on hand. They work great for every season and holiday, eliminating your need to store them between seasons! I also love glass jugs. They can run pretty expensive, but not this one! It was under $10. My secret? It’s the cheap jug of wine from Walmart! So next time you have a party, invite some people over to help empty your new jug, and you will be left with your next centerpiece!
When creating centerpieces, I always like to add different heights and dimensions; it’s just more pleasing to the eye. When you work with mason jars all the time, you have to find ways to achieve this. For this particular centerpiece, I added a few old books I picked up on clearance at a used book store under one of the jars. They are subtle but gorgeous, give height and offer dimension. They are perfect!
Do you have any favorite pieces to decorate with in this awkward time of the year?
