DIY Paper Ornament Tutorial & FREE TEMPLATE

DIY

Holidays are a really big deal at our house! Like a really, really big deal. We go all out — the home decor, yummy food, presents and traditions. I feel strongly about creating wonderful, if not magical, memories for my children that they will have with them their whole life. My mother instilled fabulous Christmas memories in me, and I love having the opportunity to do the same for my children. To celebrate the season we decorate gingerbread houses, visit Santa’s workshop, deliver secret gifts to our neighbors, make an embarrassing amount of cookies and decorate our three Christmas trees. Yes, I said three! One of our favorite traditions is making ornaments for these trees. Every year we make a new ornament to serve as a reminder of all the things that happened that year. They are completely different from year to year in style, color and texture. When Christmas rolls around, we love opening our box of homemade ornaments and reminiscing about years past. It usually takes a few days and a lot of research to decide what type of ornament to make, but this year was easy. While my daughter and I were browsing at Anthropology and saw these incredible paper ornaments, we knew instantly that we wanted to recreate them (with our own personal touch) for our 2014 ornaments. I love how they turned out and am excited to share how we created them.

Here is how to create 3D paper ornaments.

SUPPLIES

Template of Ornaments

Sheets of 12×12 Card Stock (I like the textured and patterned papers)

Scissors

Hot Glue

Ribbon/Twine

DIRECTIONS

Download the template of the ornaments HERE. Trace the ornaments on heavy cardboard and cut out. These will serve as your stencils to create the paper ornaments.

Using these stencils trace numerous ornaments on the 12X12 sheets of card-stock. The more ornament pieces you have, the fuller the ornament will turn out. Cut out the pieces.

Once you have a stack of ornament pieces, take all those pieces and fold in half, making a strong crease. Once they are folded, begin to hot glue the halves together. Use as many pieces as you like and once the ornament is as full as you desire, make a loop with ribbon or twine, stick it in the center of the ornament and glue the last two ornament sides together. The ornament should be three dimensional with a fun loop to hang on your tree. See photo tutorial below for more direction.
