Love is in the air as we inch our way towards the most romantic holiday of the year, and today I’m here to share with you this adorable Valentine’s Day banner. This is a great project to use up some of that scrap wood around your apartment from past projects. And what better way to bring love into your home than with some pink paint and hearts!
This banner comes together pretty quickly, and all you need are a few supplies from your local craft and/or hardware store. Each of my wooden blocks are about 5 ½” x 5 ½”, so if you are working with different sizes, you might need to adjust the printable below for your stenciling.
- Wood scraps
- Paint
- Love printable [Link to the Love Printable PDF File] for stencils
- Hammer and nails
- Paintbrushes
- Stapler
- Sandpaper
- String and/or rope (for string art and hanging)
If you want all your wood blocks to be the same sizes, then you might need to trim them up with a saw or just embrace their differences. This is totally up to you. Once you have your wooden blocks cut to size, paint them the base color you want. I wanted mine to have vintage looks, so I took a paintbrush and drybrushed some chalk paint over the pink. To drybrush something, just barely dip your brush in the paint and blot the majority of it off. Then gently swipe your brush back and forth across the block until it blends together and you’ve achieved your desired look.
For the “o”, I decided to use a heart. Place the heart printable you printed out and center it on one of the wooden blocks. Then hammer your nails in place around the perimeter of the heart. As for the remaining letters, I cut mine out to create a stencil and used that to paint the letters. Mine didn’t turn out perfect because I didn’t have an actual stencil, but since mine is distressed and I planned on sanding it, I wasn’t too worried about it. If you want a precise line, you might want to purchase an actual stencil.
Paint all of your letters in. Then, for the string art heart, remove the paper once you have your nails in place. Next, wrap the string around each of the nails in a random order and tie it off once you are finished.
After my letters were dry, I decided to go ahead and sand them to distress the letters as well. This also hides any imperfections with the stencil job 🙂
In order to hang the banner, I used a hand stapler (the kind you use for upholstery) to attach the rope to the backs of the wooden blocks.
I hope you are able to incorporate this adorable banner into your Valentine’s Day decor this year!
