I am always eager for Fall to arrive because it is unquestionably my favorite season of the year. One of the first places I bring in autumn decorations is our front door. When I was thinking about what kind of wreath I wanted this fall, I remembered a beautiful wreath shared on Madigan Made a few years ago. I decided to make my own sugared fruit wreath that is perfect for early fall, Thanksgiving, and even through Christmas!
I purchased a small foam wreath from a dollar store several years ago. Whenever I get a new idea for a wreath, I strip the form down to the bare foam and reuse it. This same wreath form has been used for six or seven different wreaths over the course of four years. This time, I began by wrapping the form with burlap ribbon to give it a neutral, rustic base.
I saved all the faux fruit I used to make my wedding centerpieces eight years ago, but you can find similar pieces at craft and hobby stores or online. I fired up my hot glue gun and adhered the plastic fruit all the way around the wreath.
I added more and more pieces of faux fruit to the wreath, filling in the gaps with sprigs of berries and grapevine spirals. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do this. If you don’t like how it looks, you can always pull the piece off and try again.
If you look closely at the picture above, you will see spider web-like strands all over the wreath. Those are pesky hot glue strings. If you have a project that ends up covered with those annoying guys, blast the project with a few bursts of heat from your hair dryer and they will shrivel right up.
I really like the way the warm colors of the fruit play against our newly painted front door. Take time to consider the color of your outdoor space when you are creating front door decorations.
While it is still too early for me to have fall flowers and pumpkins out on our porch, I am making plans for September and October already. In previous years, I planted grocery store mums in buckets to place outside our front door, and I added small pumpkin decorations in the pots. This year, I am thinking about wiring more of the sugared fruit into the pots to tie them into the door decor.
My new front door wreath is happily hanging on our door and will likely stay there at least through Thanksgiving, maybe longer. How do you decorate your front door for Fall? Check out ForRent.com’s other Fall decorating ideas!
