The football season is upon us. That means you’ll probably have friends visiting your apartment or you’ll be a guest at someone else’s event. Whether you’re entertaining at home or heading to a friend’s, it’s always nice to have a few go-to recipes on hand. Today, I’m going to share a favorite of mine: Barbecue Chicken Pinwheels.
Pinwheels have been popular for quite some time. I remember enjoying them at parties when I was a kid. Pinwheels are great because you can use different fillings to create a plethora of flavor combinations from savory to sweet. Whatever you fill them with, they are easy to make.
The pinwheels I’m baking today were inspired by barbecue chicken pizza. I always have fun taking classic recipes and giving them a modern twist. This savory appetizer is another example.
Most pinwheels start with some kind of dough. I often like to use frozen puff pastry because its flaky texture is a crowd pleaser.
Since these pinwheels are my take on pizza, I topped the pastry just as I would if I were putting together a pizza. Barbecue sauce went on first. That was followed by cheese, chicken, bacon, and red onion.
Once the ingredients for your pinwheels are in place, the dough is rolled up to form a log. Then it’s sliced into 1/2-inch pieces.
If you’d like, you can freeze the pinwheel log before slicing. By doing this, there is almost zero prep work when you need an impromptu appetizer. Just slice and bake.
Bake your pinwheels for about 20 minutes! Although they are delicious on their own, I’m serving mine with a barbecue ranch dipping sauce.
Whether you’re a fan of this particular pinwheel variation or you decide to create your own flavor combination, pinwheels might just become your new best friend for easy and delicious game day entertaining.
