DIY Homemade Dye for Easter Eggs

Food and Entertaining

Come Easter time, families everywhere will be dyeing eggs in celebration of the spring holiday. Although the dyeing packages are affordable and fun, additives in the dye can be harmful. If you are interested in creating your own egg dye at home, with all natural ingredients, here is the recipe.

What you will need:

  • Hard Boiled Eggs (how ever many you would like to dye)

  • White Vinegar

  • Multiple bowls and pots

  • Food ingredients for colors of dye (listed below) – 4 cups for vegetable solids and 3–4 tablespoons for spices per quart

Colors of Dyes produced with all natural ingredients:

  • Red: 3 cans of beets in cranberry juice (instead of water) – produced a dark reddish hue

  • Pink: Frozen cherries – made a very light pink

  • Red Orange: 3 tablespoons of chili powder produced a nice reddish-orange color

  • Yellow: 3 Tablespoons of tumeric produced a great yellow

  • Green: A mix of canned blueberries and their juice and a few tablespoons of tumeric produced a gorgeous earthy green color

  • Blue: 3/4 of a head of red cabbage (chopped) made a beautiful blue

  • Grey Blue: 2 cans of blueberries and their juice made a grey-blueish color

  • Grey: Frozen cherries mixed with blueberries yielded a grey color

Instructions:

  • Add the dyeing ingredient of your choice into a large pan.  Cover the dyeing “agent(s)” with one inch of water. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar per quart to help the color adhere to the egg, and bring to a boil. Next, simmer for 20–30 minutes or until the desired shade is achieved.

  • Once the dyeing mixture is the color of your choice, remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

  • Submerge the eggs in the mixture until the color is achieved on the egg. The longer the egg stays in the dye the darker the hue will be.

After you’re done, you will have eggs to hide, display, and eat! All natural dye is a fun activity to do in your kitchen this Easter season, and the process will surely wow your friends and family. Happy coloring!
