Kansas City has long been known for its stellar barbecue, so it should come as no surprise that it’s emerged as a city with one of the best beer scenes in the country too. Besides having some of the most affordable rents of any major city, the amazing and ever-expanding craft brewery scene has everything from nano-breweries to major national players, from traditional German lagers to experimental local cask ales. Whatever your preference, Kansas City is a safe bet to find the perfect pour.
Boulevard Brewing Co.
2501 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, MO
The largest and most well-known of Kansas City’s many watering holes, Boulevard’s beers have their fair share of devotees from coast to coast. Free tours are given seven days a week on a first come, first served basis, but larger groups can book dedicated showings in advance. It’s got a tap room on site that serves the classics as well as one-off test batches for the more adventurous imbibers.
Green Room Burgers & Beer
4010 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO
Voted one of the Best Nerd Bars in the city, Green Room Burgers & Beer specializes in extremely small-batch brews, cask ales and delicious burger pairings. Always one to support the larger scene it’s a part of, Green Room developed a reputation for one of the most complete offerings of beers from other local producers at great prices.
Martin City Brewing Co.
500 E. 135th St., Kansas City, MO
Strap yourself in, because the story of Martin City Brewing is a bit confusing. Occupying two locations directly across the street from each other (because of the illogical nuance of local liquor laws), the brewery consists of a pub and a separate pizza and tap restaurant. Serving up to a dozen of its signature beers at both locations, this is a great spot to try some of KC’s most exciting brews, no matter which side of the street you’re on.
Big Rip Brewing Co.
216 E. 9th Ave., Kansas City, MO
A so-called nano-brewery, Big Rip Brewing is basically the kind of place a mad scientist would create if he wanted to make some refreshing suds. Putting out small-batch brews to customers directly from the tap room, it’s established a reputation for flavorful and unique gluten-free offerings. You can bring your own food if you like or order up some great next-door Mexican food straight from the bar. Private tours are available with advanced booking.
Cinder Block Brewery
110 E. 18th Ave., North Kansas City, MO
North KC may be across the river, but it’s quickly becoming a destination for the city’s beer fans, in no small part because of innovative new breweries like Cinder Block hanging its shingle there. Even though you can now find its beers across the city, the tap room is still the ideal spot to find not only fan-favorite brews but also unique test batches that might never make it to mass production.
Border Brewing Co.
406 E. 18th St., Kansas City, MO
Located in the burgeoning Crossroads Arts district, Border Brewing is fast becoming the go-to spot for KC’s coolest beer fans. Surrounded by art galleries, shops and some of the city’s best restaurants, this is the perfect spot to spend a summer afternoon sipping fantastic beers and taking in one of the most vibrant and popular neighborhoods in the city.
Crane Brewery
6515 Railroad St., Raytown, MO
Founded by a home brewer who — get this — doesn’t like the taste of beer, Crane Brewery has emerged as a darling of the KC beer scene. Dedicated to the brewing process with an almost scientific fervor, it’s made a name for itself as a serious competitor at beer festivals across the country. Known mostly for its Belgian-style beers, the “sour” style is a must-try for any adventurous beer fan.
Kansas City Bier Company
210 W. 79th St., Kansas City, MO
Like the name suggests, KC Bier Company specializes in expertly brewing traditional German-style suds. Helles, dunkles, hefeweizen and bocks are just a few of the classic lagers you can enjoy while hanging out in its amazing biergarten. Best of all? Just like in Germany, you can bring your own food and picnic with friends and family alike (as long as you order a beer or two, of course).
