Planning dinner can be tricky. It can be especially tricky as a college student. Too much homework, too many social activities, not enough funds…and the list goes on and on. Why not start a new tradition with your roommate or roommates? The more the merrier! Live alone? Find a couple friends to invite over one night a week, every two weeks, once a month…whatever you desire. Commit to one “family dinner” per week and you will find the possibilities are endless!
Sit down a day or two before your scheduled dinner and decide what you all want to make. Think entree, side salad, appetizer, dessert. Remember, this is a fun, festive time for you and your roomies to all get together, kick back, relax and contribute to a meal! Eating the meal will be fun, but cooking and prepping together in the kitchen can be just as fun.
Decide who is in charge of what. One of you make the salad, one of you take on the entree, one of you call dibs on the dessert, someone be in charge of cleaning up and doing the dishes at the end. Don’t worry if someone seems to be doing more or less than others. This is a weekly tradition, so all the duties will eventually be evenly dispersed.
Maybe one person goes to the grocery store for all of the ingredients and then that person collects the cash. Maybe you all go together and buy the items you need for YOUR specific dish. Grocery store runs with friends can often be very entertaining!
“Family” roommate dinners are a great way to connect with your roommates and friends and catch up on what’s going on in their lives. Also a great opportunity for trying out new recipes that you’ve had your eye on. Not to mention, it’s a great way to save money! You all can have a fabulous home made dinner and split up the cost. Or, maybe you want to make it so that one person is in charge of everything on a rotating schedule. However you choose to do your family-style roommate dinner, have fun with it! Need inspiration? Check out all the recipes and meal tips ForRent.com has to offer. Bon appetit!
