A Delicious Fat Tuesday Tradition: Doughnut Day

Food and Entertaining

Have you heard of Fastnacht Day? I hadn’t until I moved to Pennsylvania. It’s a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition to celebrate Fat Tuesday by using up the rest of the “rich” ingredients in a home by making doughnuts before the Lenten fast. In other words, it’s a great excuse to make this sweet treat — and it’s earned Fastnacht the nickname Doughnut Day around these parts!
You don’t need to start from scratch to make great doughnuts. In fact, we’re able to whip up Fat Tuesday doughnuts in minutes using this secret weapon: canned biscuit dough.

Now comes the fun part. Add cinnamon and sugar to a brown paper bag, drop the warm doughnuts in and shake until covered.

We served them in fun Mardi Gras-colored bakeware lined with parchment paper for a festive look. They make great party treats and are easy to eat too — just don’t blame me if they’re too easy to eat. They tend to mysteriously disappear each time I turn my back.
