It doesn’t matter if you are vegetarian, vegan or just a straight up carnivore, Austin’s breakfast taco game is strong. Amongst the wild, whacky and weird of Austin, there are some killer taco spots that serve up awesome breakfast, as well as those that serve beer to help cure your hangover or take the load off of the work week. Here’s a list to ensure the start to your morning is on the right side of the bed!
Tacodeli
Multiple locations at Spyglass, Rosedale, Gracy Farms, Westlake and Crestview
Tacodeli in the heart of Austin is the all-organic and farm-fresh spot for all of your taco needs. Its niche is primarily serving the wide variety of musicians and performers who have strange hours. As a matter of fact, that is part of the reason why, on the weekends, it serves breakfast tacos all day long. The Otto is the house favorite, consisting of organic refried beans, bacon and avocado with Monterey Jack cheese; or if you’re like me, steak and eggs is the way to go — sirloin, scrambled egg and Monterey Jack cheese.
Joe’s Bakery
2305 E. 7th St., Austin, TX 78702
(512) 472-0017
Joe’s serves a lot of choices for breakfast — everything from pastries and donuts to breakfast tacos. The best thing about Joe’s, as far as breakfast tacos go, is the Joey Rocha Plate. This plate consists of two eggs cooked to your preference with bacon or sausage, beans, carne guisada and potatoes. A tip is to order the bacon because Joe’s batters its thick-cut bacon to make it extra crispy.
Mi Madre’s Restaurant
2201 Manor Road, Austin, TX 78722
(512) 322-9721
Mi Madre’s is the place to go in order to kill any hangover. Breakfast tacos are served up with a side of comfort. Take your pick of 18 breakfast tacos ranging from $3 to $5 and you won’t be sorry. If you end up at the University of Texas in Austin, this is the place to go after a night out; plus, it’s open until 10 p.m.
Veracruz All Natural
704 E. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX 78702
(512) 981-1760
Veracruz All Natural is the celebrity in the breakfast taco game of Austin. Its reputation comes from serving up generously portioned tacos that are extremely crunchy, in the best kind of way, of course. The Migas taco is a local favorite, served with avocado, tortilla chips, pico de gallo, eggs and cheese. For $3, you can’t go wrong.
Tamale House East
1707 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78702
(512) 495-9504
This Austin staple is still kicking despite having closed down its location on Airport. Tamale House East is definitely one of the best places to go for breakfast tacos … or, I don’t know, maybe a tamale! It serves tacos with homemade tortillas and all the delicious fillings your heart desires. Here’s a tip: Try the iced horchata coffee; it’s phenomenal.
Tyson’s Tacos
4905 Airport Blvd., Austin, TX 78751
(512) 451-3326
Being a few feet away from where the Tamale House on Airport used to be, Austinites have learned to love again at Tyson’s. Ordering here is just as enjoyable as the food. The Stripper consists of bacon, eggs and potatoes, whereas the White Girl is served with potato, eggs and cheese. Or maybe you’re feeling frisky and want to have the best of both worlds with a White Girl Stripper, where you get both. Also, stop by on Fridays for Free Beer Fridays and cure that hangover with some good old hair of the dog!
Marcelino Pan Y Vino
901 Tillery St., Austin, TX 78702
(512) 926-1709
Marcelino’s serves the breakfast taco in good old Tex-Mex fashion. I think anyone who serves bacon in thick cubes should be awarded some sort of medal, not to mention the fact that its salsa is spicy in all of the right ways. You can sober up a bit with a breakfast taco from Marcelino’s, then start all over again at the Hops and Grain Brewery right down the road.
Papalote Taco House
2803 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78704
(512) 804-2474
This authentic taco house doesn’t mess around in the breakfast taco department. You can go with your average breakfast taco meat, cheese and potato, or if you want, you can go healthier with some vegetarian options. The tacos are served up large for a small price; plus, many believe their mole sauce is one of Austin’s best.
Bouldin Creek Cafe
1900 S. 1st St., Austin, TX 78704
(512) 416-1601
Bouldin Creek Cafe is the place to go for some amazing organic breakfast tacos. This true Austin joint is often sporting local art, punk rock servers and vegetarian or vegan foods with attitude. Definitely try anything with its tofu scramble!
