A Lucky Tradition: Lentil Soup

Food and Entertaining

Well, here we are with the new year just around the corner. Wowzer! Where in the world did this year go? It seems like I blinked and it was gone. Do you ever feel like the older you get, the faster time seems to pass? Gosh, I’m starting to feel very, very old. {hee-hee}.
Anywho, let’s talk a little more about New Year’s festivities. How do you ring in the new year? Are you a party animal? Or are you a homebody? Growing up, I spent every single New Year’s Eve in church. I was raised in a pastor’s home, and we prayed in the new year. Honestly, I loved that tradition … it truly was a wonderful way to usher in the new year. Once everyone parted ways, we headed home for yet another tradition: soup. My maiden name, Kuert, is German. And with that came the German (and Kuert family) tradition of ringing in the new year with a bowl of lentil soup. A double batch awaited us, and my family sat around the table enjoying a bowl of it. Lentil soup is said to be a lucky tradition, ya know. If you eat a bowl on New Year’s Day, it will bring you good luck and fortune. Regardless of the “lucky” part, I love this tradition. I enjoy making a batch every year, and it always causes me to reminisce on years past and the sweet memories made with my family (and church family).
I thought I’d share the recipe for our lucky tradition with all of YOU today!  And I’m fairly certain you’re going to love it as much as we do.
