Food and Entertaining

When you’re preparing your menu for the Thanksgiving holiday meal, switch up the typical pumpkin pie for a southern favorite that your family is sure to love. Many of us might find ourselves going back for second helpings of sweet potato casserole (guilty!), and this pie is the official dessert version of that favorite dish. Down south, we love to make this sweet potato pie during the entire holiday season, from Thanksgiving all the way through Christmas. It’s also a great dish to make for potlucks, friendsgivings, and holiday gatherings of all sorts. It’s simple to make and can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

If you know me at all, then you know I love to give everything a little pizzazz! We eat with our eyes first after all, right? Presentation is everything, especially during the holidays, so jazz up this sweet potato pie with toasted marshmallows and pecans! If you really love marshmallows, then cover it completely with mini marshmallows for the ultimate treat. Add a drizzle of caramel sauce if you’re feeling particularly decadent. It is the holidays, so go ahead and make the calories worthwhile!

One of the reasons I love pies is that they don’t require a lot of effort to make. Once you lay out the pie crust and add your filling, you’re basically done! While I love cakes, the frosting and layers add a bit of time to the process, and my kitchen always look like a disaster afterward. Pies, on the other hand, are a one-bowl process — perfect for making in a small kitchen. Don’t worry friends in apartments; I got you!
Your friends and family are going to love this recipe! You’ll notice it says to use cooked and mashed sweet potatoes. You can either bake your own and mash them or you can look for canned sweet potatoes at the grocery store. Sometimes you’ll see them listed as yams, which are very similar. My preference is to bake them myself, but if you’re in a pinch, pick up a can at the grocery store.

If you love pumpkin pie, then you will definitely love this southern sweet potato pie. The flavors are similar but slightly different, so you could certainly offer up both if you want to serve a grand dessert spread. Why not host a holiday dessert swap where you invite friends to come over and bring one homemade dessert? Then everyone gets to leave with a different dessert to enjoy! Or just host a dessert party for everyone to try all the different treats. This pie definitely won’t last long on any holiday table!
sweet-potato-pie-crustI like to flute the edges of my pie crust with the back of a fork, so if you love this look, then try that trick next time!
