The tale of the Jack O’ Lantern begins with a trickster known as ‘Stingy Jack’ who made a deal with the Devil. Stingy Jack convinced the Devil to turn into a coin to “pay” for goods. The Devil was fooled after he jumped into Jack’s pocket where he was trapped and stripped of his powers, all because he found himself next to a small metal cross.
Jack eventually agreed to let the Devil go on one condition; the Devil must never take his soul. When Jack finally passed, God refused to allow him into Heaven. Jack then met with the Devil who refused him access to Hell. Instead the Devil sennt him off into the night with just a Jack O’ Lantern to light his way until the end of time.
