College is one of the best times of your life. You are learning, meeting new people, experiencing new things…but, at some point during those four years, we have all wished on more than one occasion that we had just a little more spending money. We get it – with studying, social time and the many other things you must balance in college life, it’s hard to find time for a job. Below are some great options for part-time and weekend jobs.
1) Library Monitor: This may sound boring, but just think how much quiet time you’ll have to get your homework and studying done! Duties generally include things like monitoring study spaces to ensure they remain quiet, checking out and renewing books, etc.
2) Teaching Assistant: At many schools, there are large freshman introduction core courses and teachers are often looking for upperclassmen to help them grade papers, proctor exams, monitor study groups, etc.
3) Campus Tour Guide: Think you know your campus pretty well? Why not turn that into a money making hobby!? If you are outgoing, welcoming and full of school spirit, this is the job for you.
4) Peer Tutor: You’re in college, so there are tons of opportunities to become a peer tutor. Does your school have a strong athletic program? Many that do recruit other students to help tutor athletes. You could be editing the paper of your quarterback! Plus, this is a great thing to put on your resume.
5) Book Store: Get a job at the book store and you will most likely get an awesome employee discount on necessary things like textbooks (which can be super expensive) and fun things like school spirit attire.
6) Babysitting: Babysitters can make great money! And the best part is – it’s usually straight cash. If you can find a local family in your college town that needs a regular babysitter, you’ve hit the jackpot! If you like working with kids, this is the money-making side for you.
7) Study Participant – This has got to be one of the easiest ways to make some extra cash in college. Most of the time, all that is required of you is to complete a survey or fill out a questionnaire. If it’s online, you can even do it right from your dorm room or apartment. And, hey, you get to say you participated in a university-based study!
8) Waitress/bartender – Coffee shops, restaurants, bars – all prolific in the majority of college towns, so chances are, they are always looking to hire. Tips are an awesome income, especially if you are working somewhere that has a popular night scene.
These are, of course, not your only options. Take a trip around town, check out your school’s career center, and peek at the classifieds. There are tons of opportunities for students to take on a job for a little extra spending money.
