What To Do In-Between College Classes

Off-Campus Living

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had the perfect class schedule with no long breaks in-between classes? Unfortunately, not many students have that gem of a schedule. What most students experience are classes spread throughout the day, all week long with those awkward long gaps of time; could be a two hour wait time which can be such a pain. So you don’t lose your mind and twiddle your thumbs before each class starts. Here are some 6 productive things to do during your longer breaks!

Grab food: If you do have that gem of schedule and jump from class to class, you don’t have a lot of time to eat, but at least you get to leave the educational building early. If you’re stuck with a wait time, use your breaks to grab a bite to eat, not just a quick snack. You can either go to the campus cafeteria, a local restaurant or enjoy your packed food. You will feel rejuvenated that you actually got to sit down and enjoy a meal instead of rushing and stuffing your face with chips.

Gym time: We all make excuses about not having time for the gym. But hey, if you got the time, why not? Most schools have a fitness center on campus where students can go for FREE! Use this time to your advantage and burn off some steam from a stressful student life. If you don’t feel like showing up to your next class all sweaty, pack some clothes and freshen up after your workout. The fitness center typically have showers available in the locker rooms. If you’re not into completing a heavy workout, try a yoga class or walk around the indoor/outdoor track. Overall, if you have the opportunity to exercise during your long break, it can actually help you stay productive.

Visit office hours: If your professor’s office hours align with your down time, take advantage of your and their time! This is the time to either ask questions before or after their class; if your professor’s class is on your schedule that day. Not only will this help you decode their lectures/emails, this is the time to build a student/teacher relationship with them. You never know if you may need their recommendation in the future.
Power nap: This might not seem productive, but naps are a good thing – especially if you are seeing dark circles under your eyes. Many college students are guilty of getting little sleep due to cramming for exams and trying to submit the assignments on time. Coffee is a great friend, but it can only do so much for so long, so why not catch up on your Zzz’s? If you live on campus, walk back to your dorm so you can sleep in the comfort of your own place. If you are a commuter, you could use your car as a makeshift bed for 30 minutes or an hour.
Library: This is a no brainer. However, sometimes we get side tracked and decide to just keep pushing our assignments off our to-do list. Don’t procrastinate! Use this time wisely and get started on your homework assignments or studying for an exam. You are already in student mode, so get a head start on your work. This will give you more time later to do the stuff you want to do.

Netflix: So this is the least productive thing you can do, but at least you’re not just sitting somewhere and doing absolutely nothing. If you have already completed your errands and homework for the day, go ahead and treat yo’ self with a Netflix original or show. Just think of this another activity before and after class.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. Scrolling through your social media news feed is mindless and provides no benefit other than exercising your thumb. Next time you have a break in-between classes, put some of these options into action and try to stay productive – even if it’s binging on Netflix!
