Terriable apartment

I used to live in shadowbrook from 11/5/2019 - 3/5/2021 with my husband. We bought a unit and the close date was 2/8/2021. So we already planed to move out until our lease ends. Three people knocked on our door someday morning in January. They asked us if we wanted to continue our lease. We said no, we would move out before our lease ended. Due to the convid-19, everyone wore a mask. We believed they were from shadowbrook office due to they were asking about our lease. We had experienced... that shadowbrook staff knocked on our door directly and walkin in our apartment to check our roof before. We think it should be a notification which we will move out before our lease ends. I returned our keys until 3/2/2021,then I got a couple calls from shadowbrooks staff, I explained the whole thing, and she said will send us a notification about the statement which wont charge us , she would check what she can do. Then it changed us silently without any notification .
Today we just noticed our bank, shadowbrook changed us accelerated rent charge rent (almost $3000)which is not reasonable. Staff knocked on our apartment to check on January, we did tell them we would move out . They considered the notification date is the day I returned the key. So the bill changed additional $3000 which is the penalty for the late notification. It is like a trap to charge more from me.
For the living environment, the property was so old, I can hear anything from upstair and there were a lot of ants during summer. Stay away from Shadowbrook!!!

Be careful up big rent increases and high electric bills

When we moved in, the grounds here were beautiful and they still are. The amenities are nice as well. So it left a good first impression.

But after living here for most of a year, there are a few big drawbacks that anybody should be warned about before committing to live here.

1. Most of the apartments here are old and haven't been updated significantly in a while. Which means no AC and very old baseboard heaters, as well as single-pane windows and I'm assuming little-to-no insulation. The...
result is it's hard to keep the place warm during the winter and the electric bill for our 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment costs us over $400 some months. That drops to around $100 during the summer, when we don't run the heat much.

2. After finishing 9 month lease, we were forced to sign a new lease for 9-12 months or face a $1,000 a month increase in our rent. We can't commit to that in our current situation, so we're stuck paying it until we can get out of here, likely having to pull our kids our of their schools mid-semester.

3. They have not done a good job communicating with us. Questions about our lease have gone unanswered even as the due date to sign a new lease was looming. Promises to have management review our rent increase and get back to us have also not happened. And when we went to them asking about the price of a 4 month lease, hoping for it to be a good bit cheaper than the month-to-month, they gave us a monthly price that was actually higher than the month-to-month rate. Which leaves us wondering if they'll raise our rent with each month that we remain on a month-to-month lease.

So while this is a nice place at first glance, be warned, once you've committed, you may be in for some nasty surprises. And I'm assuming these practices also apply to the other Prometheus properties in the area.
