Dirthole

My move-in day was like a portent of doom. They didn't tell like three of us to try to schedule our move-in around each other, so I ended up paying movers $75/hour to wait for the other guy who had the elevator key to complete his move. After I overpaid the movers by a few hundred bucks, I started unpacking - that night I found out that I was directly above a nightclub and the music was so loud it literally shook the walls and the floor. The neighbor turned out to be a bass player who needs to... practice with the amp on. And the walls are so thin you can hear the neighbors sneeze. About a week after moving in, I went to talk to the club owner about what nights they were open because it was seemingly random - not even confined to weekends of earth-shaking music. There was a guy in the elevator with slashes down his face bleeding all over the place. He got jumped by some neighborhood kids for like, walking on the wrong street. So I ended up finding a different place after a couple months of sleep deprivation and misery, forfeited the deposit and half a month's rent. Really, don't rent here. After over 20 years of renting, this is by far the worst experience I ever had. And I lived in DC for 15 of those years.

Prior Tenant Recommendation

I just moved out of 1429 in May. The apartments are pretty nice (although in ours we only had 1 opening window which is quite frustrating) and there is Hog River Brewery on the bottom floor which is a bonus but the drawbacks are many. The 'management' is non-existent. It changes constantly without notice and when / if there is someone in the office, they are pretty useless. Maintenance requests usually go by the wayside. The trash rooms get over loaded. People smoke cigarettes in the hallways... and stairwells. If you choose to pay for the parking garage (which I highly suggest you do, due to the crime ridden area that is Parkville even though the parking garage doors are always broken; there were multiple car break-ins / damage to cars in the back parking lot) prepare to clean your car off the filth / trash that lives down there. 'Management' said they were going to pave the back lot (which contains giant potholes) and clean the garage but that never happened. The two elevators are constantly broken. Tenants hold the buttons and mess up the sensors. Yes the freight elevator is nice for moving in and out but on a day to day basis it is less than ideal as they are slow and clunky. God forbid you forget something in your car or get delivery food and have to go back down. Takes forever. There is a Spanish dance club on the bottom floor of the building next to Hog River on Bartholomew St. On random week / weekend nights the music thumps loudly and draws quite the crowd. I lived on the top floor facing Bartholomew St. (west). I witnessed not one but two shootings. Residents and Hartford PD can attest to this, just call. During open hours there is one Hartford PD officer sitting there now but the crowd pays no mind. One of the shootings I witnessed there was a cop sitting right there giving parking tickets. This is not a tall tale. The area is far less than desirable. 1429 has no outdoor space. There is nowhere to walk other than Pope Park which is pretty dumpy. IMO I would avoid this building. It's too bad because the apartments are decent and they do the Know Good Market every few Thursdays which is held next to the building. Food trucks, etc. If Hartford could clean up the area it would make a big difference. My two cents. Take it or leave it.

New Tenant

I have recently moved in 4 months ago and aboustly love the space! Love the modern/ industrial look of the building. This building and the management company have met all my needs so far. The building is pet friendly & people friendly. They have a big frieght elevator for easy move in although it has been down twice since i have been living here. But luckly they have a second elevator in the building.

Beautiful apartments, but very difficult management

The apartments are beautiful and have all the industrial elements I love about old buildings. However, there has been a new change in management and the new management is nothing short of a disaster. I personally underestimated how much management would actually impact me, but it does. This includes everything from them not knowing how many bedrooms I had in my apartment to suddenly changing the terms of the lease to not being able to fix the elevators (it's 12 large flights of stairs). The... neighborhood is not that great and for all the troubles I've had with management changing on me, I've left the building for a cheaper, better neighborhood apartment. Honestly, I would advise you to not be swayed by the awesome character of the apartments because things change on a moments notice here.
